Yeah, I click the touchpad. Tapping seems pretty bad idea if you move different windowses constantly. Also have no idea why there is the right-click area interfering with my clicking cause I don't want to have it at all. Think I'll try it out for a while if I get used to it but it doesn't look like that...

Funny that I gave my girlfriend the computer for her to judge for herself if it's up to anything. She hated it probly even more than me, said that theres no way she will be ever using that piece of crap ever again. The thing is that she insisted back in the day when I got my Macbook that it needs a dedicated mouse for her to use it. Got it, she used it 2 weeks and then started using only the touchpad. Nowdays she uses her Macbook Air for everything she ever needs to be doing.
Can't really understand why these machines that are supposed to be all you need for work would leave something that big in so bad shape. I probly just try to live with this for a while and then if its not possible head towards Apple store even when I really don't want to go that route anymore. -
AnakiMana, it appears from this and the other thread, that you are reasonably pleased with your T440p. It's working well for you, and doesn't have the issues that others are complaining about?
Could you reiterate your experience with it and give us an updated assessment of the device, please. These 4 weeks or so later.
Thanks. -

Looks like I got a faulty wireless card or something because Windows won't even detect the card. Lenovo is sending me a box overnight so I can send in my computer for service.

I don't know if I'm allowed to post this here, but mine got a shipping label today (ordered 15th November). Will be joining you guys pretty soon!

I just received mine, but haven't really put it through its paces yet.
I have the LG screen. Backlight bleed is unnoticeable until you flex the display at which point it gets bad very fast. Screen is otherwise fairly average IMO.
Keyboard feels fine but I feel like the lack of an indicator light for caps lock will become a problem. They put a light for fnlock, mute and microphone mute so I don't know why they didn't just throw in one more.
I'm mostly just hoping that after a few weeks the new trackpoint will start feeling natural. -

Trying to do a clean install with windows 8.1 but I cannot find wlan driver. I have the realtek adapter ( http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/gjww10ww.txt ) but lenovo does not provide a windows 8.1 driver.
Any suggestions? -

I tried but it refused to install.

I'm still trying to figure out the windows 8.1 thing, but another problem has cropped up.
The fan is exceptionally noisy, even on the lowest speed. It is a loud vibration, sounds almost but not quite like grinding. I know that this should not be occurring because it can be stopped by removing the back panel and playing with the fan enclosure. The fan is very quiet when working properly, and rarely even turns on during normal use.
I really don't want to have to return this because it will be a huge PITA. -
I haven't had problems with the fan or the screen on mine (though I got HD+ instead of FHD because I'm a poor college student), and the keyboard feels solid and quite nice to me. The trackpad definitely is the weakness of the machine. Using the buttons with the trackpoint is kind of clumsy, and currently those aren't working at all in Linux. (I haven't tried to get it set up yet, though, since Windows 8 is a dual-booting disaster and I'm going to install Windows 7 before setting up my "permanent" Linux partition.)
My current biggest problem, though, is that my ethernet port appears to not be working. I have a few more things to test out with it, but it made for a frustrating day when the wifi wasn't working today. -
Played around with the fan a bit. Still kind of a problem but I set it to stay off below 65c (tpfancontrol) and it stays completely off for all browsing/media consumption so I'll live.
I installed all my drivers on a clean win8 install then upgraded to 8.1. Everything appears to work, even though the realtek wifi wouldn't install on 8.1.
I find that the keyboard backlight is far too bright for the minimum screen backlight, which is a bit disappointing.
I'm starting to understand why they changed the trackpoint/touchpad - the new design is larger and nicer looking. Unfortunately the design still needs refinement. The press action is heavy and tiring. They also need to play with the size of the click zones for ergonomics, and add some more texture to differentiate the buttons.
I can't pretend the current version is comparable to the old one, but if they keep working on it I think it may catch up. -
What do you think of the overall build? IMO it's a bit lacking. The clackpad is kinda cheap feeling/sounding and I would not be surprised if it developed a lot of slop over time, and the lid is just bad -- ridiculously flexy (because it has zero bracing inside) and with no solid closing mechanism (it just kinda flops shut). Very disappointed with that. Most damning of all, I feel this is the first T-series Thinkpad I've ever had that will need some babying, mainly because of the crummy lid. -
I can accept a flexy screen as long as it does not slowly increase the backlight bleed over time. Similarly, my hinges feel fine, but only time will tell. I cannot one-hand open the laptop (it just lifts up) but perhaps the hinges will loosen with use.
The trackpad/point is a disappointment, but not a disaster. On the plus side, the cooling system (or perhaps haswell power management) is genuinely amazing, I would have never expect a laptop to stay at fan0 for 95% of what I do.
The whole windows 8 driver debacle along with the fan made for a very frustrating day but I do not regret my purchase.
There are lots of small changes that would make this laptop so much better. If lenovo can even marginally improve the t440p (instead of removing more keyboard buttons and copying consumer designs) the next round of thinkpads could be really good.
I would have to think long and hard about recommending a t440p. If you have a reasonably current laptop it might make sense to see what the future has in store (but when isn't that true?). -
Out of curiosity, what kind of sleeves and/or cases are you using for your T440P? I need to get a new one soon.
-
Anyone else with problems on WIFI-drivers? It seems to drop the connection for a few seconds and be back to normal after. Trying new drivers which somehow made the Lenovos-Wifi-tool not recognizing connections all together but seem to work fine for now. This is all in win7 64bit.
I've somehow made my peace with the touchpad if my wrists just stay healthy cause the power need to "clunk" is more than I've used to. Atleast this machine is cool and quiet on my usage. -

I recently had a problem with both wifi a ethernet drivers (win 8.1 x64), I kept getting "Limited Connection" for no reason apparent. Sometimes it didn't set the DNS server, other times it just set the IP address to 169.xxx. This even happened AFTER I got a valid connection and had been online for a few minutes. I also couldn't check the adapter's IPv4 and IPv6 properties, everytime I tried windows said "In order to configure tcp/ip you must install and enable a network adapter card."
I had to uninstall both drivers from device manager ( without checking the box to remove the drivers), then remove the drivers using the "Programs and Features" and re-installing the drivers which I got directly from intel's site.
This seems to have fixed it. At least I can access the adapter IPv4 and IPv6 properties and no longer get the "In order to configure tcp/ip you must install and enable a network adapter card." warning. -
i'm about to order this baby, where do you guys get the ultrabay from? perhaps the one for t420 wouldn't work?
should I go for HD+ or FHD, significant price difference. -

And you're using the vanilla Windows indicator instead, I would guess. -

I won't be needing it though, because I had a little bit of luck when an SSD in my PS3 broke down. The seller said they don't make that type of SSD anymore (Crucial V4 256GB, really a piece of sh-t SSD) so he wanted to ship me a brand new Crucial M500 240GB. I asked if it was possible to turn that one into a discount for the Crucial M500 960GB and he agreed. Now I get the 960GB (411) with a 122 (price of a brand new 240GB) discount! Only because some sh-tty 14 month old SSD broke down.
About the screen dilemma, check out the Youtube video in the reply I did earlier:

Hi all,
Just received my christmas present - t440p a couple of days ago.
Haven't had much time to play around with it yet..
Having read all the feedback here, I was mostly worried about the backlight bleed.
Display on mine is Full HD (ips).
Yes, there is definitely backlight bleed and having read other's posts, I think the cause is probably the assembly of the display&lid.
Anywho, just a little remark that fixed the issue for me - since the viewing angles are quite good, changing the lid position even just a bit, alters the bleed unnoticeable/invisible at least for me.A simple thing, but might work for some.
For me it is probably not worth the hassle of sending it back and hoping to receive one that might or might not be assembled more carefully. Also, I've been looking to buy a decent laptop for many months, and read hundreds of reviews. In the end, it seems, there is no laptop that is perfect, there is always the need for compromise.
Couple of things i noticed though aka first emotions
*all looks good, but..
-backlight bleed
-sharp (?!?) cheap (plastic) corners on the palmrest
-touchpad scrolling did not work properly out of the box (jumpy, kept acting like a "home" key sometimes), driver update fixed it fortunately.
-the 1mm metal panel on the back, between the display's backside and just above the battery pack, peels off paint. On a new product like this??
I'm a first time Thinkpad buyer and overall it seems like a good laptop! -
i couldn't find an ultrabay on ebay.ca, can someone help me out?
-
So I just called about switching out my LG display for an AUO, and it looks like they won't allow me to do it without returning and repurchasing a "custom order". I'm going to call back in the morning and speak to a different department about it, though, and see what they say.
Apparently according to the "higher level techs" they can't switch my screen because of poor viewing angles or light bleed -- even though it's completely unfair that some people received AUO displays and others received the inferior LG displays. -
That sucks. Sounds like Lenovo has finally noticed that everyone wants to replace their LG screens.

I got my machine, replaced the main hardrive with 840 evo 250gb, upgraded to windows 8.1 and put the hdd in ultrabay. On overal, this machine is G-R-E-A-T and I love it! (even though i got an LG panel with a light bleed).
Unfortunately, when my computer gets into sleep mode, it forgets the 2nd hdd. I saw this problem earlier on this theard (page 12), but I couldn't find a solution. Do anyone know how to solve this issue? It drives me crazy :-( -
Did you get the official Lenovo ultrabay caddy or a third party one? -
1. If my ears don't betray me - so yes, I think it spins down after some idle time. When it spins down, I can still recognize it.
2. I get a third party caddy. But I don't believe that it's the cause for this problem, because there is no "smart" part in the hdd caddy. It's just a mechanical part (with dumb sata&power connectors).
3. Interesting phenomena: I read on microsoft hotfix ( You receive various Stop error messages in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2 when you try to resume a computer that has a large SATA hard disk) that might solve this problem for win7. From it I understood it might be related to timeout of the hdd when the machine wakes. So I moved it to sleep mode, waked it up and waited for 15sec before login - and the hdd was there! my computer recognised it!! but when I logged in 2sec after waking up - it disappeared! again! -
The EXACT same thing is happening to me. I phoned tech support and went through updating the BIOS and the drivers and changing the power settings, but nothing worked. I had a technician out here today to replace the motherboard and then he and tech support decided it was not a motherboard issue afterall - rather a software issue. This leaves me in an awkward position though because I have NO IDEA WHAT TO DO NEXT. Clearly, Lenovo tech support has no idea what to do either, since they are foisting it off on Microsoft (you'll have to contact Microsoft). Tempted to tell them to take their stupid computer back. I had a T440 for a couple days at the beginning of December and had no problems with it. OS is Windows 7 Pro 64-bit.

How long do these things take to ship? I ordered 3 days ago and the estimated shipping date has already been pushed back from the 16th to the 21st

After almost 2 weeks of usage, in different environments, I've noticed a few things about my T440p, primarily audible annoyances, that I'd like to check with other users..
First, the fan is still horribly annoying. It seems that going from state 0 to 1 is a significant difference, and even at the lowest state (1) it's quite loud. The 0 -> 1 transition sounds like quite the ramp up.
Second, when idle, the laptop emits the horrid "cpu whine", up top/left, almost directly beneath the TAB button. I'm assuming this is capacitor vibration, and it is most noticeable when the laptop is not in use. I've tested various power options, on battery/plugged-in and did not notice a difference. However, when disabling CPU power management in the BIOS - it is no longer apparent. I think this just disables the low-powered CPU states, so the drawback there is the CPU is running much hotter, and the fan constantly..
On the fan - anyone else have a more subtle (audible) sounding transition in fan speeds? Or is there a major difference between off and the lowest state?
On the whine - anyone else notice this? Any thoughts/tips? Is this likely the CPU or the motherboard, or PSU?
Thanks! -
My fan is quiet... do you have any canned air? You could try just dusting the fan in case there's some extra plastic from manufacturing in there or something....
Ok, now that I'm in a quiet room, I do hear some of what you're talking about with the fan... I guess that's why TP Fan control exists... you could have it so it favors a mode where the fan spins more often but at a lower speed... -
I also just noticed a bunch of driver updates are available today...
-
Hi unferth, thanks for the comment.yeah, I could try to get some compressed air but didnt think that should be necessary as the machine is brand new.
so you fan too spins up and is quite loud even on speed 1?
great, will check out the drivers, anything worth mentioning? -
Can someone with a T440p with i7-4800MQ, a SSD as system drive and Windows 8 setup, checks if the laptop is Connected Standby capable ?
Test procedure is explained here : See Average Battery Life and Check for Connected Standby on Windows 8 « Ultrabook News and the Ultrabook Database
Thanks in advance. -
I wouldn't call it loud, everything this machine does is far more "subtle" than any of my past notebooks...
before my m6600 I made a terrible mistake and bought a sager, it had a 720qm and would get crazy hot and had a terrible keyboard... before that I had an asus v6j.. before that I think I had a dell with a desktop p4 in it or some craziness..
Anyway.. Comparatively, this machine is quiet..
Right now my fan is at 2700 rpm (maybe this is speed 1).. and it's quiet... (not silent) but I think the only sound it's making is just a little more than just wind noise....
Yep ok 2700 rpm ish is speed 1, because lower than that the fan turns off... wow.. I didn't realize it actually stops... the m6600 would never ever do that
Ok, pulled out my radio shack DB meter... meter on the table facing the vent about 1 inch from the vent looks to be about 61 db (at that distance it's likely to be wind hitting the mic)
At 5 inches away (still facing the vent) it's about 55 db -

Hi all,
Would like your comment on the battery life.Any difference with different OS-es?
Mine seems to last for about 3.5-4h only, and that's with 1) light usage (browsing) 2) powersaver/energysaver/balanced mode 3) brightness at 90%
Is this really the max running time?
Lenovo's 7.4h estimate seems to be off beyond reason.
Additional info of my laptop:
6cell battery, Full HD display, Win 8, haven't messed around with disabling nvidia (as is)
Cheers
