First of all, I'm puzzled why Lenovo is shipping the T440p with Windows 8 and not Windows 8.1.

I've spent about 8 hours trying to upgrade it to Windows 8.1 and the installation fails everytime. I get a 0xC1900101-0x40019 error message after it restores back to Windows 8 due to the failed update. I've tried multiple Windows 8 refreshes and resets, and updated to the latest drivers, removed Norton and disabled antivirus and firewall and none helps.

Should have took my friend's advice and switched to Apple...

That sucks but apparently is not uncommon: 8.1 install error 0xC1900101-0x40019 and 0x80070652 - Microsoft Community

Have you updated all the drivers on the machine before trying? I suspect some preloaded ones might not be compatible with Win8.1. In particular, check the Nvidia drivers (if you have the Gt730M)

I, too, am baffled why Win8.1 is not the preload on new machines. Having waited so long to release Haswell machines you'd think manufacturers would already have the Win8.1 image from microsoft.

Almost makes me want to stick with Win7

Yup, I updated all the drivers before trying. I have the latest NVidia drivers which are Windows 8.1 compatible.

Probably for this reason you posted. The T440s came out in Europe and China (and therefore was tested) long before WIndows 8.1. I wouldn't want an experimental system on my computer. But I am switching to Windows 7 when I receive miy non touch T440s.

I was finally able to get the update to go through. I quickly went through the setup screen and still got the blue screen of death, but it had been far along enough that when it restarted, Windows wasn't going to restore back to Windows 8. When I finally was able to boot, it hung in the logon screen. I put in my USB recovery drive, booted through it, brought up the Command prompt and set up safe mode. The problem seems to be traced with the Intel wireless card. I deleted it from the device manager, rescanned for hardware changes and it reinstalled itself. I then restarted and voila, no more problems.

    Still, what a headache...

I'm now having the same problem... will try fiddling with the intel driver. Anyone else having problems upgrading?

Edit: I ended up totally uninstalling the nvidia drivers and utility, and the intel wireless driver/utility, then finally the update worked. What a PITA
