Anyoen else care to comment on the backlight uniformity of their T440p display. Mine sucks. Granted, it's not that visible in general use, but on a black screen it's very noticeable and I worry that it'll impact my photo-editing work.

I know I've said it before, but my T440p with FHD screen has NO backlight bleed. Before OS loads shouldn't count since it isn't really in use and drivers loading/resolution changing eradicates any bleed on mine. I did tests to make sure I wasn't missing it.

On those with bleeding, I wonder if it's the bezel causing it or the screen itself? Surely, if the bezel is doing it, it could be tweaked.

For those who are interested, you can find a couple of photos about the T440p once it's opened to see who you can upgrade RAM and/or hard drive. Personnaly, I put back the 16 Go RAM of my T430 and upgrade my hard drive with a Samsung 840 Pro.

    Here is the photos :

Hard drive is a the bottom corner on the right under this strange leef of aluminum.

Do you know which display panel you have (LG or AUO)? I have the LG display, which evidently is worse for bleed, but the overall design of the bezel and lid is also not great IMO - far too flexy. Looking at a black youtube video I can see two patches of bleed, even at lower brightness levels, so I'm planning to send my machine back to Lenovo to see if they can replace the display with the AUO model.

Does anyone know if it's possible to get Lenovo to change the shipping address once the package is in transit? Mine was supposed to arrive 12/19 but with no arrival in sight and me heading back to school in about a week, I think my best bet would be to have it sent there instead of worrying about it not arriving here.
I think I will call customer service tomorrow and ask, and also see if I can get the 5% discount.

Does Lenovo offer any other ultraportable with a discrete graphics card? I like the specs on this but I can't bring myself to like the Thinkpad design.

There is the u430p and y410p, the former is incredibly hard to find with dGPU and the latter weighs 4.9 pounds, so not really an Ultraportable.

You can get it on Lenovo's site, but only with HD graphics.

U430(p) is the consumer version of the T440s and Y410p is the consumer version of the T440p. Lenovo basically has a consumer edition of all of their business laptops :p

Note that build quality is obviously not as good and you don't get NBD nor the trackpoint.

Do you have the UPS track number (which should be in an email from lenovo)? If yes you can try to arrange with UPS to change the delivery address but it is complicated.

Anyone who received theirs already have a general ETA to the US once they received the departure scan from Hong Kong? Thanks!

Is it possible to replace a non FHD screen with the FHD one? Are the cables the same? May want to upgrade down the road, thanks.

I might be wrong but I believe that leaf is basically a spacer used for 7mm height drives whereas if a 9mm height drive was installed it might not be needed.

Got mine delivered yesterday but haven't had a chance to open it up. First impressions are mixed but I'm going to wait a week or so before commenting in detail in the owner's thread.

I will say that after changing the ship dates three times and without any prompting from me Lenovo sprung for about the fastest delivery method available to them. The packaged moved from Hong Kong to my door in Ohio in 48 hrs. Interesting that the news is saying that UPS apparently choked on everyone else's holiday deliveries this year.

Mine took 43 hours from HK to Louisville. It sat there for 19 hours before it got a customs scan. It left Louisville 21 hours later for LA, and was delivered in 36 hours after that.

Mine was shipped December 13, FINALLY left Hong Kong on the 26th, arrived in Anchorage on the 25th (thanks, international date line), and departed there this morning. I'm not sure where exactly it is heading for from there. Anyone know what distribution center it would go to for the Midwest? I'm REALLY hoping it arrives before I leave on Monday.

looks like we're in the same shipment.
I called UPS today, and turns out they had no (or limited) transportation in HK, and several shipments were delayed. I too am hoping mine comes before Monday, but will be out tomorrow so hope to arrange a Saturday delivery if need be. the UPS rep thought it would be likely to reach and be released from KY tonight, but was not sure, as this is when it hits customs. once that happens, they'll finally issue a delivery date, which will hopefully be tomorrow.

What number did you use to get hold of UPS directly for this? I'd like to see if they can give me a delivery estimate for once it's cleared customs, to see if they can ease my anxiety.

Edit: never mind. Through customs with expected delivery by end of the day Friday. Only a week late!

Mine finally arrived. It's awesome compared to the W740SU that I owned previously.

I took photos of the unboxing, later today I'll take comparison photos with my sister's Macbook Pro (2012, I believe)

They made you pay through the nose and you got noise and backlight bleed... If I were you I would've returned it, you paid for getting at least that degree of service.

I contemplated returning it but there were no alternatives in that price range with FHD display and quad-core CPU (the Dell M3800 I thought about buying costs much more). So I'll just make full use of my onsite warranty.

Overall, this machine is doing the opposite of growing on me (shrinking on me?!). Hardware problems aside, the design and build quality just looks and feels cheap compared to my past Thinkpads. The only thing that pleasantly surprised me is the keyboard, which feels great.

Quite interesting. Before I bought my T440p, I checked the DELL laptops but the problem is that in France you could no longer create or customize a laptop according to your needs (except if you are a company and you buy 500 units). I'm a not big fan of one or another brand ; just need a computer that meets my needs. I try by phone and the guy confirm that it was not possible... So, Lenovo.

Two key requirements for me are a decent FHD display and quad-core processor, which none of the above offer (E6440 and T430 have no quad-core option, Y410 no FHD option).

And that's the problem... on a price/performance basis, the T440p is hard to beat. I'm just not a huge fan of its build quality or design (or indeed a fan of its fan!!)

For fan noise, did you try tpFanControl? thinkpad normally comes with conservative default setting for fan noise.

The fan coming on is not a problem. The problem is that I have a faulty one that makes a buzzing noise when it spins. It's being replaced later this week, along with my display panel.

If not for the buzzing noise problem I have, the T440p's fan actually seems pretty quiet, and for general web browsing etc. rarely even comes on.

I was gonna buy a 3-year depot warranty, but as soon as I saw the screen I upgraded to a 2-year onsite warranty for the same price instead so a tech can come to me to fix it :D

That means a guy is coming to your house to fix it, that's awesome... Let me know how that works out.

Mine had a standard 3 year on-site warranty, didn't really understand they actually come to your house to fix stuff... I was thinking of adding a year and adding accidents coverage, but I think it maybe is better to invest in more expensive insurance on the entire household so everything is insured for accidents, depending on the costs of that insurance.

Can you add time to your Lenovo warranties before they expire, or are they a one time purchase deal?

AFAIK as long as the computer is still under warranty you can upgrade that warranty. There's a section on the Lenovo site (under "services and warranty") that has the upgrade options. Mine came with one year standard warranty and I bought the upgrade as soon as I received the machine.

Correct with one caveat: it can be done only once during the machine's lifetime.

Whixh means if you were to upgrade it to two-year onsite now and decided to add another year six months from now, that wouldn't fly.

yes correct me if i am wrong but i believe if you bought lets say a 3 year warranty after your warranty ran out, you would actually be purchasing a 2 year warranty because of it starts from the date of your original warranty started, you would actually have to buy a 4 year warranty after a year to get 3 more years.

    No.

You would be purchasing a 5-year warranty, and that is the maximum any ThinkPad can carry. That would add 2 years to the original three.

A couple other things would be accidental coverage, if you want to go that way, must be added in the first 90 days. It is also limited to four years even if you've got a five year warranty.

I have my desktop (2+ yrs old i7 3930k, 240gb sdd raid, 16gb ram, gtx 560ti.... ) as my main computer, however, sometimes i travel 1 months away from it. I am trying to upgrade my T410 that would last me at least 5-6 years.

Please suggest if I should get the t440p (with the i7 4600m and i also recently purchased a 256gb samsung 840 pro, with which i will replace the 500gb hdd) with 16 gb

OR the carbon x1 (with that 2560 x 1440 screen) when i travel or at home.

I like the resolution on x1 but on 14" screen, i do not know how significant would that be for my ERDs and Excel ?

my works include: occasional Adobe illustrator and photoshop, and a lot of browser tabs, visio work, large excel files, large ERD works and web programming on wamp... no gaming

    budget is not the concern..

    thank you guys
