Hi there! In the market for a new laptop I saw lenovo still offers t440p's with a quadcore. I'm familiar with this model (in a lower config) at work and I like it well enough so I was wondering if they were still a good value? Looking around I can get one for about 1200 with the nvidia card or just over 1k without which seems a decent enough price to me.

Or should I just buy the 450(or S?) and be done with it? The draw of a quadcore is rather nice for when I run VM/s or if I decide to do any gaming on it, though admittedly that last bits a low priority. The 440's optical drive is also a draw for the ultrabay caddy to have 3 total drives for various things.

    Any thoughts?

Edit: It also occurs to me I can possibly just snag a lower end CPU and upgrade that myself since it looks socked, the quad core 4710mq looks to be about 160 - 180 on ebay, granted more research will be needed to ensure a compatible processor is purchased etc about 190 http://www.impactcomputers.com/04x5374.html

1k sounds way overpriced. About half of that is the current market price of a T440p in good condition but mid-range specs.

If you do go for the T440p then you will probably need the new touchpad with buttons as well, which will add extra costs.

From my perspective, the biggest advantage of the T440p is the swappable CPU. It's the last ThinkPad to have this.

The last 14" ThinkPad maybe. The last one is the W541. ;)

Right now I would wait for Skylake.

Funny thing is the Quad cores on eBay are insane I've seen some as high as 2k maybe buying a low-end range and upgrading myself would be cheaper? I've seen the 1080screen for less than 100(assuming it's a straight swap) the processor is less than 200 etc

Skylake mass deployment will happen in early Q1 2016.

I'll put in my two cents. I ordered a quad-core T440p last month (still waiting for delivery). I was looking around at available 14" or 15" quad-core laptops and was not impressed with what I saw; there's just not that many to choose from. I knew I could wait around for the Skylake quad-core laptops to launch, and hope that there are not issues with the implementation of the associated new technologies. However both Broadwell and Skylake models will not provide much of a difference in processing performance, so I don't feel very excited about them. Sure, the Skylake CPUs will enable better battery life, but for me that is not a big priority. So I ended up ordered a laptop whose design is two-years old, and that is sort of a downer. However for my needs, I will be getting a very fast CPU paired with the ThinkPad form factor that I prefer. I may have buyer's remorse in 2016, when there will be lots of cool new and shiny Skylake-based laptops being offered. We'll see.
