Add warranty and ask them for an extra bezel just in case.
The technician for my onsite warranty had a hard time to take it off, it looked pretty crap after.

Also make sure you find an AUO panel provider with no dead pixels guarantee.
If the money is not an issue, just go with the touch screen.

The T43 was an exception. In that generation Intel dropped the PATA interface and IBM had to add a SATA->PATA bridge to retain compatibility with the existing T4x drives. That bridge was supposedly causing problems with some proprietary ATA commands so they decided to add the warning if an aftermarket drive was used. These commands were used only by some diagnostic software though. The successor of T43, the T60, was using SATA drives natively so the whitelist has been removed.

Is it true that the touch panels are somewhat glossy, though?

Mine hasn't arrived yet but I know it has a layer that covers the whole screen+bezel, so I guess yes it may look glossy compared to the non-touch.

Check this image that someone posted on reddit: http://i.imgur.com/TCqjcHu.jpg

That "glossy" image is something of a worst case, I think. No image on the screen, and direct lighting in the reflection.

Yes, there is some additional reflection from the surface. But it's not that bad unless you're really trying to work with bright lights in the reflection (possibly outdoors). I value matte screens, but this one is still pleasant to work with. My guess is that anti-reflection surfaces would either reduce the crisp detail of the screen, or react with oil from fingers to cause more issues than they solve. I'm quite happy with my touch FHD T440s.

that looks kind of glary... i wonder if the brightness will compensate... why couldn't they (Lenovo) keep shipping non-touch AUO's.....

Thanks for the feedback, vancamp. I'm just not sure what to think about the additional gloss.

    On a different note:
I'm not sure I understand the difference between:
What is single and double? If I choose single, will that still give me two M.2 slots?

Good luck with your purchase and whatever you plan to do to it.

I'm just too old for this kind of "custom configuration" -- especially when a lot of dough is leaving my pocket. The thought of sweating 30 minutes on gingerly and preservingly removing the back cover (and sweating another 30 minutes on gingerly and preservingly removing the screen bezel) is totally unpleasant -- to me, anyway.

I apologize if this has been asked already, but can anyone comment on how the 1080p display looks when you set the resolution to 1600 x 900? I want the benefits of the 1080p display quality, but 1080p just seems a little too small for me to read on a 14" display.

This wasn't taken in the best lit room, but you can see that going from lowest brightness (basically unusable except in a completely dark room) to second lowest brightness eliminates most of the glare. So yes, somewhat glossy, but much much better than full glossy screens. I think the display sharpness more than makes up for the semi-gloss.

You can see that the screen almost spans the entire space, not like the non-touch displays with the bezel.

That pair of images helps a lot. Thanks. The pseudo-glossiness reminds me of the screen on the original X1 Carbon (The only Thinkpad touchscreen I've actually been able to see in person).

In my opinion, it's still plenty usable at 1600x900. Just slightly fuzzier than at 1080p, but I wouldn't mind working at that lower res. I might post up pictures later, though I don't know how informative that would be.

I've learned that airplane mode (wifi off) and idling at the desktop uses up around 5Wh each hour, so I'd say you can squeeze in 4 hours in that 23Wh battery, that's assuming you don't use the internet and just look at a powerpoint or word doc (which is what I do usually).

Light web browsing can get you 2-3 hours (around 6-8Wh per hour).

I know this isn't the right forum but I'm considering the X1 Carbon. Just got an email from Lenovo and can now customize it. For $1397, I'll get the QHD display, i5 4300, 4GB of Ram, 128GB SSD. Does anyone know if you upgrade the Ram and SSD?

    I don't think so.
Why not go with the t440s? It's a great machine, if you don't get unlucky with the screen. It seems though that Lenovo is getting their things together and providing an acceptable LG screen now, you could still get the AUO by choosing the touch model (likely to happen).

I haven't noticed a change in tone on this thread with regard to the quality of the LG FHD screen (although I have been dipping in and out so may have missed it)

On the verge of putting in an order for this notebook from the UK site. But I'm noticing that the shipping time is more than 4 weeks (non-touch, Intel graphic) . Why such a long wait when this laptop has already been on sale for several months?
Also, the HD+ screen option is practically the same price as the the FHD screen option (actually £1.32 cheaper for FHD). Why?

    Hey guys!

My t440s finally came. JUST took it out of the box and I'm really liking it.

Anyway just wanted to know what model my screen was, is this the AUO one?

    http://imgur.com/wr7aToJ.jpg

edit: So apparently it IS the AUO model! hurray! Ordered 17/1, shipped to Canada

However, I've noticed pretty bad lightbleed at the bottom. anyone else with the AUO also experience this?
This is what I'm talking about, is this normal? http://imgur.com/g0Rar16.jpg

    Really happy! http://imgur.com/K9zd2DZ.jpg

My returned t440s with LG had similar light bleeding, like 5 of those you have at the bottom plus a big one on top right corner.
That is only visible during boot or with dark backgrounds, no?

That's cool that you got the AUO in a non-touch, nice machine.

And yeah, I'm pretty happy at my screen! I guess I got lucky, or maybe they started to have stock again :)

I made an account to ask this but is there supposed to be a dead zone on the touchpad? I've already had warranty replace the keyboard bezel which includes the touchpad but it returned with the same problem. It's roughly 10mmx50mm big and is located on the left side. When you click it it doesnt register a click or anything and it feels different (spongey) when you click it down to the rest of the touchpad. I drew a box where the dead zone is which you can see in these pictures http://i.imgur.com/HROCU7y.jpg and http://i.imgur.com/XxXGpeb.jpg . I'm just wondering if it is supposed to a 'dead zone' or I've just been unlucky twice - first with the original machine and then with the repair.

Yes I think there is, go to the mouse properties and I remember coming across a "dead zone" setting.

On another note, does anyone else feel the touchpad isn't 'smooth' enough?

Hi, I'd appreciate it if someone could help me with some configuration options:

    1) If I buy with HDD with the intention of immediately installing a 512 GB SSD myself (to save a bit of money on the upgrade cost), is there any point in having the NGFF/M.2 SSD?

    2) Smart Card Reader: I have read these can be used to read cards for purpose of authenticating users. Do smart cards have any uses not related to security/authentication?

    3) Is there a difference in performance between the 65W AC Adapter and the 65W slim AC Adapter? They are the same price on my configuration page.

    4) The upgrade price on the wireless card is negligible. But I don't want to run into stability issues related to using any very new technologies. Which card would you recommend? Thinkpad 2x2 BGN, Intel Dual Band 7260AC, Intel Dual Band 7260AN

Besides this forum, you might want to look at the link below for posts regarding the trackpad, and while you are at it, check your laptop for all the other problems listed (especially threads with a lot of posts). Also check the T440p posts, as some of the hardware is the same. That way if you decide to keep it you can attempt to get the problems fixed at the same time. Of course there is the whole arguing process with Lenovo support to acknowledge that the problems exist, and if you are lucky they might actually fix them properly. Personally I got rid of my T440s.

    T400 / T500 and newer T series ThinkPad Laptops - Lenovo Community

That is the first I heard of problems with lightbleed on the AUO panel....it just keeps on getting better. Maybe, like some others, the bezel was just not installed properly. Your lightbleed is a lot worse than what I had on my LG panel.

I was hopeful looking through the settings but I cannot find anything that fixes the problem. Unless I'm not looking enough.

I'm still convinced the actual hardware of the touchpad is broken because the affected area doesn't click like the rest of the pad

So you "kinda stole" it from MacMall, couldn't believe they honored the pricing error, sent it back for another chance at the display lottery, and now hate them because they decided to make you financially whole? Got it.

    1) The card itself is useless if you're not going to use the HDD but your T440s will have an extra M.2 slot. That slot won't be there if you won't get the card. I'm not sure though now useful that extra slot might be.

    2) I've never seen it being used for anything else but maybe it can. Not sure.

    3) There is no difference. They're both 65W after all. The slim is slimmer but also wider. I bought it because it fits better in my bag.

    4) I had no problems with the AC card so far but I tried it with just 3 routers so far. I even bought the miniPCIe version for my X201.
