Bought it from a Lenovo Dealer. I explicitly asked them to send me a LiteOn keyboard. The previous was NOT defective.

FRU LiteOn: Depends on the language you need. See the full FRU list here to find out which one is the right for you (CHY=Chicony, LTN=LiteOn).

If anyone is interested in a T440s at this point look in the Outlet or Ebay. There are some smoking deals going on around. I picked up an i7, 12GB, 512GB SSD, 1600x900 unit from the Outlet a few weeks ago for a little over $1200.

    Maybe someone can help me?

I have a problem with my new T440s (fresh Windows 8.1 Pro installation). When I start the laptop the fan is inaudible, it's perfect. After, if I run a software which needs more power, the fan starts. The problem is that it never stops after (even if the CPU and RAM consumption is very low).

If I turn the laptop in sleep mode and the PC wakes up, the fan is inaudible (like after a fresh startup).

    It's normal?
Can I control manually the fan?

PS: I've installed the "Lenovo Power Management" driver

Maybe this could be driver related, was it like this before installing windows 8? Did you by any chance hit anything in the hardware after removing the back cover? What if you try booting a live version of ubuntu, will you stlil get crazy fan speed?

Does the T440S also need the Intel CPPC driver? The T440P does......

[EDIT] There is also a potential bug in the indexing service, where Win8 will continually index even after it has completed its run. Check CPU usage, and if necessary, temporary disable the indexing service, or alter what locations are indexed. I remove everything except the Start Menu and Outlook from indexing - it just isn't necessary on an SSD.

I finally got my T440s with the nVidia GT730M with AUO Display. *euphoria*

Before I want to install the OS, I prefer to charge it. Do you know what struck me?

How the am I supposed to know when the T440s is fully charged, without booting the OS? Even the power supply has no LED indicator. Does the "i" from ThinkPad glow, when it's charged to 100%?

I don't know what you are doing Lenovo with the status LEDs ... however overall the Notebook is really fine. And hey .. I do like the TrackPad. Sure dedicated buttons would be better, but the Trackpad is alright so far. The only thing that really bothers me, that the caddy for the SIM card is made from such thin plastic, that you can literally see through the plastic. That's all you have Lenovo? Weak.

Overall I would give it a 9/10. MacBooks being at 8/10.

Yeah, I couldn't believe it either. I can't understand why they're saving the cost of 1 LED on a premium product like this. But after using the computer for a few months, I'm not missing it as much as I though I would. I do miss it sometimes, but it's not been as big an issue as I thought. Still offends me that it's not there though.

First time poster. Ordered my T440s over 2 weeks ago, unfortunately they just shifted ship date out another 10 days.

I am curious if there is any way to get the serial number from the machines on the outlet to then go do a parts look up and see if they have the LG or AUO screen. My assumption is that the outlet models are more likely to be fitted with LG screens due to those being more likely to be returned.

    Thanks

They list the serial number for every machine in the search results. Most of the ones from a few weeks ago were early units and iirc almost all were AUO units. I'm sure the units you're suggesting will pop up soon. Here's another great deal for someone who wants touch. In the link I posted you can see the serial number in the url.

Okay got it, thanks for pointing that out. It looks like the one you posted is gone, at least when I click link. But by using the part number I can see the LCD is listed as Sting FRU Touch LCD ASM Victory, which in the BOM pdf online doesn't seem to be the AUO, but it also doesn't seem to indicate LG. Am I missing something here?

If most have been AUO maybe I should just wait it out, I got it for a decent deal through the B&N site anyways. Nontouch with FHD for 1050. Plan to upgrade RAM to 12GB and swap in an SSD after getting it. Are the refurbished ones as good as new in your opinion?

Was just about to buy one of those $850 T440s units with the 1080p displays in the outlet. Right as I went back to my room and pulled out my credit card they weren't there anymore -_-.

Been waiting a while too. How often does the outlet bring refurb T440s units with 1080p displays?

Aha! Finally managed to get one of those $850 units from the outlet. Took me a few hours of refreshing. Came with 1920x1080 panel (although didn't specify if multi touch or not), 4GB RAM, and some hard drive that I will swap out for an SSD.

Anyone know how fast Lenovo outlet ships? If it doesn't arrive next week I probably won't be able to pick it up for a while since it is getting shipped to my permanent address.

Also I noticed last minute it comes with a 6 cell cylindrical battery. Anyone know how I can get my hands on a 3 cell? I want the thin feel to the notebook, I don't need that much battery life anyway. I'll probably sell the 6 cell and pick up a 3 cell.

Wow that was fast, just 12 hours after ordering my T440s from the Lenovo outlet I got an e-mail saying that my order was being prepared for shipping and that it will ship tomorrow. Hopefully that's true!

Also, I was wondering if anyone has any experience with these Chinese battery companies on eBay claiming their products are genuine Lenovo products, but are sold for half the price. Shipping from Hong Kong too. Anyone have any experience with these batteries?

Cool video. I'd like to see it redone with the laptop held level, like it would sit on a table when being used. I can't help wondering whether there is a reason the cook held it front-end downward like he did.

I can attest though, that I have more than once been saved by the spill-resistance of these machines. More brands should take liquids into account like Lenovo does.

Ok, I ordered a T440s earlier today and am going to drop my own SSD and RAM in it. I already have the SSD. I was planning on getting a 8GB RAM, but when I went and started looking I'm getting confused. If you go to someplace like Newegg and use their helper (basically, show me a list of all the RAM that will work with this particular laptop) the list is huge. Even going to a specific manufacturer (like Crucial) can give you several options. Any suggestions? What is going to work the best/give the least problems with installing? I don't mind paying a few more dollars for reliability/ease.

There you go: Computer memory upgrades for Lenovo ThinkPad T440s Laptop/Notebook from Crucial.com
I ordered that directly from them (even got a free 16gb usb stick at the time). Works just fine in my t440s.

Just got my T440s. This thing is incredible. I had and returned the X240s for lots of reasons, the terrible trackpad and microscopic 1080p (I don't like to use scaling) was not good on a 12.5" screen.

14" is just perfect for native 1080p. Very happy here, but I still hate the single slab trackpad. Guess I'll get used to it because I love everything else about the machine.

Problem already: I tuned bluetooth off, now it's grayed out and I can't turn it back on. Restart doesn't fix. It's functional in device manager. Any ideas?

Edit: it's not even listed in device manager. It's as if I've removed the physical bluetooth card from the machine (I didn't).

Had to re install the entire Bluetooth driver package from Lenovo support. Very strange, but ok. I guess never turn off bluetooth because it erases the software? Who knows.

Wow there have been some extremely good units today in the outlet. 1920x1080 display, 256GB SSD, 8GB RAM for $850 refurbished.

I got mine 2 days ago without the SSD for the same price. Kind of feel like I should have waited but my order already shipped.

Someone please buy these ASAP so I don't buy 2 because of this insanely good deal =/

Yeah, I'm quickly realizing I overpaid a bit for mine ($1,350 on eBay) but it does have a full 3-yr warranty, 12 gigs, 256SSD, AC card, 1080 touch, etc so there's that.

    Good deals for sure!

Wow, these are awesome deals. Feeling pretty bad about getting the i5-4300/4gb/500gb hdd for ~1150 and then another 200 for ram and ssd upgrades. But I bought it in Canada and I don't think there's an outlet store for us. At these prices I'd switch every laptop in my house to a T440s :p

After my fresh install of Windows, I can't enter into the BIOS. When I turn on the laptop I see the Thinkpad and Lenovo logo for 1 or 2 seconds: I have try to press Enter, F1, F11 and F12 keys but nothing appends.

    Do you know why?
    Have you a workaround?

I got one of these! Couldn't believe the 1080p touchscreen included a SSD and memory upgrade at that price.

I'm coming from a T530 and wanted something that is more light and portable but still dockable. Looking to connect it to 3 23" monitors at 1920x1080 on an Ultra dock. Hopefully this works out!

Thanks for all the great information in this thread on the unit. It really helped make the decision to stay on the Lenovo side vs moving to a Latitude.

From full turn off it might not give you the prompt. Do a restart, it gives you a prompt to hit enter to interrupt and access the setup menu. Well, this is the case for the T440P anyway......

I've also had trouble accessing the BIOS on my T530 if I don't constantly keep smacking the enter key while the Lenovo logo screen is up. Seems like it will respond to a key press only during a subset of the time the logo is displayed.

I checked my part FRUs to make sure everything was looking alright but it looks like they sent me the wrong hard drive! So I contacted Lenovo support and in less than a 10 minute phone call they said they will send the correct one with overnight shipping. That's some amazing customer service! I haven't even received my laptop yet!

It will clearly state as such. Then you hope they ship you the right model that hopefully matches the specs to the letter. The outlet is famous for shipping different hardware vs. what was advertised, so buyer beware.

I could explain how to fix that, but it is easier to point out that IE is by far the best browser in the Modern UI. If you want to use Chrome, do it in the desktop.

True. I've just resorted to using Chrome in desktop (98% of the time) and IE in Modern UI on occasion. It's shocking how bad Chrome is on Win 8.1/touch/Modern UI. You'd think they would be ahead of the curve, but nope. IE reigns supreme, unfortunately.

I just wish there was a good way to keep bookmarks in sync. Don't suggest Xmarks - it made a holy mess of my bookmarks across 3 devices (including a Macbook Pro). Duplicate city and a general nightmare. I hated it.

    Hmmmm, I'd suggest Xmarks.

The secret is to never let it auto sync, because it doesn't seem to properly propagate deletions. Whenever you add bookmarks, manually do an 'upload' thus overwriting (not syncing) those on the server. Whenever you are on a new device, manually download, overwriting (not syncing) the device. You might miss bookmarks if you add to several devices at once, but it can be made to work.

So I've finally had a few days to work with my new T440s. A couple thoughts:

    • Display: I ordered it with the FHD Touch display, so no surprise, it came with the AUO panel. Colors and contrast are fantastic, with nearly no backlight bleeding even on the black boot screens. Edge-to-edge glass on the touch model is sleek-looking, albeit with a weight tradeoff.
    • Keyboard: By FRU lookup, I have the Chicony keyboard. My keys do not wobble (as another user reported earlier) and are very solid. The keys have a smooth surface that I can imagine would pick up oils quickly, however. Also, the lack of Fn media keys on this keyboard layout is just silly.
    • Heat/Noise: Fan is very quiet and low-pitched, and remains off when idle. Entire laptop runs very cool, even when under load.
    • Removing the base cover: A little tricky removing the base cover, since it comes off as one big piece with clips on all sides. Trick is to use a pair of plastic pry tools and slide along the edges. With some patience, the cover came off cleanly with no damage.
    • Touchpad/TrackPoint: TrackPoint tip is a bit more recessed than earlier Thinkpads. Will probably help in avoiding the mark left on the screen when closed. The touchpad is... really not bad at all. I was expecting a train wreck given what others have been reporting. Without the Lenovo drivers installed, the touchpad is horrible, but when the proper drivers are installed, it functions quite well in either normal touchpad use (with multi-finger clicking, gestures) or clicking during TrackPoint use.

All in all, pretty happy with the T440s. But, I am having one very significant problem:

After upgrading to a Crucial M500 SSD and adding 8 GB of RAM and clean-installing Windows 8.1 Pro, I've been getting BSODs coming out of sleep maybe around 80% of the time. Memory tests seem to pass, although I'm currently running a memory bit-fade test. Any ideas for fixes would be much appreciated...

I have had the T440s for a little while now and I just started having issues connecting to my WiFi. I have the 7260AC card. Is there any good fix for this issue?

I've updated to the latest BIOS and SSD firmware, and removed/reinstalled the latest (non-Lenovo) Intel RST drivers with no change in symptoms, so that doesn't seem to be the issue.

I'm suspecting that it's a memory issue, as I'm getting frequent BSODs with various different messages, including:

    SYSTEM_PTE_MISUSE
    UNEXPECTED_KERNAL_MODE_TRAP
    KERNAL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE
    VIDEO_MEMORY_MANAGEMENT_INTERNAL
    PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

And probably one or two others that I forgot to write now. The general theme seems to be memory-related, so I'm doing several passes with MemTest86, and hopefully it'll confirm my findings. If you guys have any other ideas, that'd be much appreciated.

A bit annoyed at having to debug such extensive problems with a new computer...

Has anyone tried undervolting? as per below source intel XTU works in T440s and the undervolt improves peformance by keeping the cpu/gpu withing tdp zone for longer duration. Any idea if this needs to be applied all time? I mean if the undervolt can be set and later software can be uninstalled?

Completely remove the ram you added to debug if it resolves the BSOD issues.

If it does, put the ram back in and make sure it's well seated in the socket and debug again. If the BSOD returns, the ram you likely have a bad dimm.

Yep, once the four passes of Memtest86 finish up, I'll be doing just that. Not looking forward to prying off the base cover again...

Does anyone know what it means if there is no LCD panel listed on the FRU list from the parts lookup site? I am evaluating some machines on the outlet and while some explicitly list a panel, such as the AUO FHD screen some others don't show anything for that particular part.
