I use 30 day standby with my 16gb m2 drive (instead of windows hibernate) to help prolong the life of my ssd
-
Can you do it in Windows 8.1?
What are the steps?
Thank you -
All I did to get it working was:
- Changed the partition id on my 16GB cache m2 ssd to be the special 30 day standby id (as per Lenovo Support Express - Considerations to deploy Intel Rapid Start Technology) - I did find a better guide than this, but cannot seem to find it (will have a hunt and update post if I do find it)
- Made sure 30 day standby was enabled in bios
- Made sure 30 day standby was enabled in the Lenovo metro settings power app
And now, after 2-3 hours of sleeping, it enters the 30 day standby -
Can anyone tell me how they got the t440s with 730m?
-
I can clearly hear cracking CPU sound when it is completely silent. Is it faulty in some way? Can you hear it too? Should I go to warranty?
AbootCanada: kuzniewski.pl - notebooki, laptopy, ultrabooki if you didn't see the post in the last page. -
I think part of the problems with the AC card is power settings. I had problems with mine at first b(when on battery), changed one of the power settings, and the problem went away.
-
Hmm, thanks for posting this. Ordered mine with the 512GB HD and MSATA cache drive, and will be upgrading it to a 1TB SSD myself. Now I know I can put that cache drive to good use!
-
I bought mine direct from UK Lenovo - in the UK the 730m is a configurable option.
-
Intel 7260AC working fine here, first in win7 x64, then in win8.1 x64. I opted to switch to 8.1 later for the sake of battery life. I kept all the wifi card power saving settings enabled.
-
So I received my unit yesterday in Canada, and it seems like a great little machine. I seem to have the so called crappy LG screen, and its certainly not as sharp and vibrant as it could be, but I'm sure there are some colour settings I can try, and its more than passable by my standards.
1. Is there a good guide or resource to configure the colour/contrast/font aliasing (clearType) settings?
2. HwInfo shows me that by default Intel's VTX (virtualization) instruction set is available but disabled. Any idea how to enable this? Id like to get a VM running with Linux, and would prefer to have hardware instruction support rather then pure software emulation.
3. What upgrades should I get to various drivers and the BIOS? Is there anything in particular I should upgrade from the default install? -
If i get the t440s with SSD, what happens to the 2 m.2 slots? do they leave it empty ?
-
I just got this laptop. I must say, I really like it. I also have the one with the LG Display and it is not bad as I like it.
They must have gotten enough complaints to do something about it. I don't think I will replace it any time soon because it is good. -
A question for you T440S owners (mine's being built!):
Is it possible to configure the touchpad to tap (i.e. not click the pad down) anywhere for a left click, tap with two fingers for a right click, and scroll by dragging two fingers?
This is how the Macbooks do it and is also how the Synaptics touchpad works on my old Dell laptop. Lack of physical buttons is a non-issue for me if I can at least configure it to behave as above! -
Yes - all 3 of these work, and this is how I use the touchpad most of the time and it works nicely. I rarely actually fully click the touchpad (unless I am using the trackpoint).
-
Thanks, looks like I should be happy with this then, I've never been one for clicking my trackpad so wondered what all the fuss was about!
By the way, I read that a driver update allows you to tap the top areas when using the trackpoint rather than having to fully depress also.
Now hurry up Lenovo and build my laptop! -
I have mine set this way now EXACTLY. Much better this way. I played with the Samsung Series 9 the other day and the touchpad/clickpad barely depressed and I thought that was way better than this super long depress of the newer Thinkpads.
I've much loved the larger touchpad now but the click to select thing was a dumb design if you ask me. -
About VTX - the settings are in the BIOS. I recall that it was disabled by default on mine.
-
Yes. Tho I guess you could get m.2's and SSDs both.
-
hi everyone.
Just want to check, is there a IPS full HD screen with touch for this laptop?
I was searching on ebay and found some listings with this description
Lenovo ThinkPad T440S i7 4600U 256GB SSD FHD Multi Touch Display 1920 x 1080 | eBay
I've checked lenovo's website and it doesn't list a multitouch FHD IPS screen. unless multi-touch FHD is IPS by default and not explicitly stated. -
The T440s' multitouch FHD (1920x1080) is an IPS panel manufactured by AOC.
-
I think you mean AUO - to be exact, its an AHVA display ( AUO - AHVA)MidnightSun likes this.
-
-
Can anyone confirm this? I'm on the fence about the T440s, with this being one of my main usability complaints. The lack of physical buttons would be offset fairly well if you at least didn't have to click the whole pad down to engage the action.
-
finally pulled the trigger on this
got it on ebay instead of lenovo US because the guy i spoke to was a total snafu, couldn't retrieve an order i made earlier in the day and get the discount. initially i was so happy that lenovo US accepts non-US issued amex (i'm not from the US) so I wanted to get it from lenovo US offers nearly US$700 in savings from local prices.
Hoping it would arrive exactly as described, no damage, scratches, tampering, recent warranty ( I can accept it being 1-2mths old since it's from ebay) as long as rest of it is untouched/new. I have no time and energy to return it and dispute it as i need the laptop urgently. -
I just had to force shutdown my machine (hold power button) because I had it in sleep, power button blinking as usual, but when I tapped the power button to resume, it ignored it and kept sleeping. Pushing the Fn key (which usually resumes it) did the same. Unplugging and replugging the power cord made it blink a few times as usual, then go back to ignoring my input. Anyone thoughts? Running Windows 8.1 64-bit here.
-
I may be wrong, but I thought I remember someone having that issue a while back. I believe it was fixed in a BIOS update at some point... not sure. Do you have the latest BIOS revision?
-
Yep, while I was having the issues with the M500, I installed the latest BIOS. That was a month ago, and Lenovo hasn't released any more updates yet.
-
Hi,
Just received it a few days ago. T440s 20AQ-CTO1WW.
All below is comparing to T420s. Also I want to mention that a decifing factor in buying it was the availability of a docking port, however all first impressions below are without having hands on docking.
A few comments I would liek to make:
Its much easier than expected to pry the backcover open. I wanted to install a M.2 SSD and was afraid to scratch the case. With some pry tools made out of nylon it was actually a piece of cake. The lack of a easy access door should not be a deal breaker. (I almost did not buy it because of this.)
However to have to use a different licence to install a OS on the M.2 SSD and the limitation to legacy BIOS is a little odd. However it is kind of great to get rid of all the blaotware pre-installed.
Top case plastic feels not good to the touch. The texture/paint gives you always this kind of dirty feel. Feles cheap and not premium at all. I have no clue what Lenovo was thinking here. This will be even worse with some dust after some time. T420s was also not great. but at least i had no urge to wash my hands after touching it.
I read the discussion about the "horrid" LG display vs AOU display. Well I do have strong light bleeding on the LG Display however besides that I feel the colors are better than my T420s and I have it for work so I would not bother to go to great lengths to get a (maybe) slightly better AOU display. However as its slightly damaged anyway I probably will replace it with AOU
.
Loving the FHD so far. Coming from 1600x900 the difference is not gigantic but still it feels more natural to me, as i spend more time in front of FHD displays.
The intensity of the LED of the Power button is a joke. In a normal office environment its like impossible to tell if on or off.
The orientation of the plugs is super strange to me. I am right handed. If I want to plug in the power I hold the power plug with my right hand. If i want to plug it in on the left side its just awkward. This should have been on the back or on the right side. Feels like deisgned by a left handed person. For the same reason I could understand the audio port on the right side, however if i use a mouse I so dont want the audio cable to run across the right side in combination with a headphone. For this reason it should have been on the left side. (Fixable via docking or USB headset tho.) VGA/Ethernet and Power should be on the back, however the whole new hinge design woudl not work than - I liked the T420S setup way better.
The touchpad feels nice due to material. However I hate the "2 finger tap" for right click thing and i dont like the "click" feeling. The whole "moveable" touchpad area thing is not for me. Would have prefered a mix from T420s with this enw glas pad. Fixed unmoveable glas touch area together with just 2 buttons for left/right on top of it. Definetly will prefer to use a mouse whenever i can.
Even if above sounds maybe a tad negative I am so far still relativly happy with it.
I am a little worried about the Thinkpad line as the many small details might indicate a lack of focus on usability and passion for the product.huntnyc likes this. -
The top case is made of carbon fiber. It is stronger than plastic and feels smoother than the plastic top on the L440.
One thing I would change is the plastic palm rest. I would prefer if they made it all out of carbon fiber. -
Quick question for anyone who knows the answer:
I need to do some recordings (just voice). The built-in mics do a decent job, but I just found an old analog mike that I used to use for web chats, etc, and I think if I could use it it would improve the recording quality. However, when I plug it into the new combo-jack, it doesn't seem to register with the computer. I've had ok luck with analog headsets (combo headphones + mic) before on this machine, but this mic with no headset does not seem to work - the sound management doesn't recognize that there's a mike plugged in. Is there a software solution, or is this kind of hardware just not compatible with the new combo jack? -
to answer some of my own questions:
1. I found with the LG screen, no amount of calibration really helped a lot, just marginal improvements. I took it to a local Lenovo authorized store, and they agreed the display was sub-par and would replace it with the AUO. Lets see if that actually happens!
2. VTX instructions are easily enabled in the BIOS. -
Should check the company name of your mic and research if the company has an updated driver for your microphone

Hello everybody. I just brought a new T440s off eBay for less than $700. Here's the specs:
Dual Core i5-4300U
12GB RAM
500 HDD
16GB M.2 SSD
14" 1600 x 900 HD+
Windows 7 Pro 64 Bit with Windows 8 Pro License
3 years of Warranty
I think I'd like to add 256GB SSD as a primary drive that focuses on fast booting, programs, etc. Is it possible to keep 500 HDD for just general storage such as pictures, etc? I am open to any suggestion.
What good brands do you think I should check out? I am thinking Samsung EVO 840.
It will be arriving next week or so.
EDIT: I will buy a 6-cell battery and AUO FHD display in the near future. -
Isn't buying computer from eBay sketchy? What if there is a program that secretly uses your Webcam?
sent through a tiny hole on a brick wall -
Seriously?
That would be the last worry that crossed my mind. LOL. More like fake or broken parts or anything like that but someone installing spy software on a laptop is not very high on the list.
In general people will do a fresh install anyways which wipes out any software and if you are not so advanced to do it yourself, most laptops have a reset mode anyways which does it automatically for you.
Yeah, definitely not something i'd worry about.
For Deafie - You will have to get a m.2 SSD which is 128GB now max in order to keep your HDD. They should have a 256GB m.2 SSD coming out later this month or next but not sure when yet.
Please note that your laptop uses 2242 m.2 SSDs. Not 2280 which are available in larger capacities. 42mm long is the biggest you could fit. -
You mean the laptop lid? My T440s certainly doesn't look like carbon fiber. Feels like a soft rubberish-plastic. Matter of fact, I've already scratched the lid while having the laptop flipped over installing RAM/SSD.
-
According to the Lenovo (UK) website it has: "carbon fiber top with magnesium bottom for maximum strength without adding weight". It feels like there is the standard Lenovo rubbery coating on top of whatever it is made of.
-
So I just ordered my T440s for $1207 after tax. (Canada)
FHD IPS Display
4300U
4GB Ram (Might upgrade myself)
500GB HDD (Have a spare 250gb samsung 840)
16GB Cache (might install linux on this ssd)
Thinkpad Wireless
I'm worried about the display lottery... Is the FHD option either an LG or AUO? And is the LG really that bad?
Would it have been better to go for the 1600x900?
I had a Y50 previously and the screen was garbage. Switched to a dell xps 13 and it was amazing. (returning it because of coil whine though...)
Help me not have buyers remorse :S I'm a student and this was a massive purchase for me. -
Can't really weigh in on AUO v. LG as I have the former in my touchscreen T440s, but you can rest assured that whichever panel it is, it is far better than the HD+ 1600x900 display option. Your configuration looks good, although it seems a bit pricey given my knowledge of U.S. pricing.
As a recent college graduate, I can say the T440s was a great laptop for university use, so I'm sure it'll serve you well. -
What kind of pricing do americans get for that configuration? I have a friend who paid $1400+ with only minor upgrades. SSD 8gb ram ips display, 4200U
-
Yikes. I got mine about half a year ago (specs in signature; I added +8GB RAM and swapped in the M500 SSD) for just over $1000 taxes and fees included. If I had waited another two weeks or so, I could've gotten an additional ~$100 off that too.
-
Holy crap! What a deal... If I could get that sort of pricing I would be so happy. I used student pricing - $930 base cost plus $220 in upgrades + tax.
-
It's an analog mike, plugs into the headphone/mic combo jack, not a USB - I don't think there are any drivers, just the standard sound drivers for the built in software that comes with the T440s. Plugging it in certainly doesn't trigger windows to start looking for drivers. That's why I was asking if there's some way to force the drivers on the T440s to accept something that's just a mike.

Phone connector (audio) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Basically, the jack is meant for stereo headphones/mono mic, the type that you use with smartphones. I suppose you can probably get an adapter to branch out the stereo output and mono input from it (which will probably require you to use external speakers as well), but otherwise, you need to get a USB solution of sorts. USB audio adapter or USB mic.
Edit: I've heard of onboard audio in older desktops where you have 3 jacks (line out/line in/mic), and they can be changed in software to all work as a 5.1 out (left-right/rear left-right/center-sub), so I suppose it's theoretically possible on the hardware end. Not sure that the t440s is meant for this though. -
You could probably also use a usb sound card?
-
Does anyone know if I can set my touchpad drag setting to "tap again to release" mode? I currently own a T540p but it shares the exact same Lenovo Ultranav settings with the T440s.. I just couldn't seem to find an option for me to select my drag settings to "tap again to release". Any help is appreciated, thanks
-
I got the FHD display in Vancouver, its the LG one. I went to an authorized Lenovo service centre I happened to walk by and got them to order the AUO under warranty, after showing them the negative reviews and the pretty bad viewing angles. The LG is acceptable, but certainly not worth the extra money you pay for the upgrade to FHD. They are ordering in the AUO screen, it seems like its pretty rare in these parts.
-
Ah. I was too concerned about this and lenovo support didn't help with this uneasiness to the product so I went ahead and cancelled my order. Just ordered a refurbed MacBook pro retina display 8gb ram 256gb SSD for $1279. Not only is is shipping faster but it also has the full 1 year warranty. I'll be triple booting with windows for games, Ubuntu for notes, osx for updates.
-
just received my t440s
so far so good, except for a windows profile issue earlier on but it's ok.
just a few questions. I have a 256GB ssd installed, hdtach says it's a lite-on???
anyway, I can get a 240gb or 256gb ssd to clone as a backup right?
lastly, how can I tell whether the panel is an auo or LG panel? -
Hi All. I got my t440s I couple of weeks ago. I was put off by the massive markup on upgrading the memory, so only ordered 4GB, figuring I could always add more my self if it became necessary. It didn't take me long to realize my mistake. So i ordered some more from Crucial (£31 vs over £100 from lenovo). I installed it, plugged the machine back in (oops) and started it up. The machine won't start and I get the audio tone for a faulty DIMM - its probably just not quite seated right.
Now my problem is that before taking the back off, you are supposed to disable the internal battery. Plugging the AC back in reactivates it. I should have tried starting it first with out plugging it back in, but I didn't think. Now I can't get to the option to disable it because it won't start. I need to reseat or remove the module. What should I do?
