anyone got a fix for the trackpoint moving on its own, besides disabling it?

A quick question to t440s owners: is the new track pad as bad as some of the reviews out there or is it simply a bit different and requires some getting used to? I find it hard to believe that lenovo would have such a big slip up on one of their flagship notebooks

I feel that it's fine, so long as you tap to click (not a fan of the buttons). The trackpoint, however... let's just say that the button arrangement ruins that entirely.

I am a big user of the trackpoint, and now I have gotten used to this new setup, I find it easier to use on my T440s than on my T430 (which has separate buttons). I do have large hands however.

I agree with you regarding the trackpad though. It is a really nice trackpad, as long as you use tap to click.

I lose my tap settings (double tap to right click) every time I open the lenovo update utility (or any other lenovo application). Is this happening to any of you?

Part of my problem is that I can't leave 2 fingers resting on the left and right trackpoint buttons, and have a click be recognized correctly. Also, it's harder to use it one-handed. I'm right-handed, and it's a lot harder to have a thumb resting on the left-click button here, because the trackpad thinks I mean a different button. Plus, I don't like the whole pad depressing in general, and it seems like it might require more force than before.

If lenovo took this trackpad and tacked on separate buttons for trackpoint and trackpad (even if it reduced the trackpad area), it would be perfect IMO.

I've just received my new W540 with 3k display, but I am not so satisfied with this screen. I would like to compare it with the t440s AUO screen. Are any of you in Amsterdam, available for a side-by-side screen comparison?

Did you figure the problem? I think I have the same problem with my machine...

Edit: Meanwhile I have called up the lenovo service and they sent out an engineer today. He brought a whole new motherboard and changed it but the cracking sound is still there. So hopefully next week (the part isn't in stock) he will change the display since in his opinion that could overload some part which cause the cracking noise.

Edit 2: He has changed today the display (and the display cover since it has an over-screwed screw in it which left a little mark on the outside of the cover) but the problem is still there, so the next step is to send the machine in for lenovo which is going to take about 6-10 business day without a replacement machine...
Other thing that happened after the 1st service that the product and serial number had changed in the bios for some reason and the engineer today couldn't make it as the original, so that is up for fixing too.

Edit 3: So yesterday I got back my machine after a week of absence. They sent it to Frankfurt (I am in Denmark) which actually would be pretty good timing although the problems are still there, the cracking/buzzing noise still can be heard as same before and they didn't fix up my serial/product id in the bios. I don't know what they have changed in the machine since it isn't stated clearly on the documentation so I am gonna call them up again in the next days.

I am in Leiden. I have a T440s with AUO (non-touch) display. My 1 month old T440s came with a LG display, which s*cked donkeyballs, so I retrofitted the AUO display myself.

Hello, has anyone managed to find a solution to the problem with erratic WiFi? I keep having problems connecting to networks and sometimes connections just drop. I'm on a Thinkpad T440s with the Thinkpad 2x2 11b/g/n M.2 adapter. Latest drivers (2012.9.212.2014) and I have great difficulty connecting to WiFi networks, especially when on battery. When the laptop is connected to the adapter, connection drops are not so frequent (though they occur from time to time). However, on battery, there is always a problem with connecting and maintaining a connection. I've tried all the power and battery related tweaks mentioned earlier in the thread, and nothing helps.

    Anyone? Thanks a lot!

Can you describe the screen replacement process in more detail? I'm considering ordering a T440s with the base screen and then upgrading it myself, but I'd like to know more about what the process entails.

    Hello

    I have a big problem.

I purchased online a T440s brand new. I opened the box for the first time myself. When I enter BIOS it asks for password and I just hit enter without entering any password. I can enter the BIOS but i can not change any settings.

What can I do? Can a brand new thinkpad come with a BIOS password out the box?

So it looks like my new notebook came with a password straight from the factory. How is this possible?

What can I do about it?

I get conflicting information regarding the type of password. First image says it's power on which can be removed but bios says its supervisor.

    Any ideas?

Contact whoever you bought it from. IIRC that image shows that a BIOS password has been enabled. The seller you bought it from should have disclosed this information before any cash exchanged hands! Is this an ebay transaction? If so do you have the link for the original listing?

Someone made a mistake. Return it to the seller for an exchange or a refund. The laptop is not suppose to have a BIOS password from factory!

Does Lenovo offer any decent wifi cards with this laptop? Sounds like the realtek "Thinkpad" wifi isn't great, and I know firsthand that the drivers for the 7260AC are subpar and my speeds are fairly poor (802.11n router) unless I turn off U-APSD and windows power saving "allow computer to turn off device". Meanwhile, my HP 6530b and wifi link 5100 works just fine on a stock install of win7 with the default driver, and when that's all updated. It's like they're regressed by trying to implement power saving features...

The Realtek cards in my X220s seemed to work just fine. You could try turning off the power management of the cards.

The Realtek cards in the x120e/x131e's at school work OK, but only if you turn off power management for them. Else, constant drops on Xirrus APs (which we happen to use). Very reproducible and happens with all of them (possibly different models of cards). Nearly unusable.

If you purchased it with a Win8 Pro license, sure. You would know if there's a Win8 Pro logo sticker on the bottom. Or if you remember buying it.

So if there's no sticker on the back I have no Windows 8 licence? The windows 7 licence is given through downgrade rights from what I know and doesn't that usually imply that you also get Windows 8?

The T440s' AUO is described as sharp and having vibrant colors but is it comfortable for intensive use of excel and word, or is too hard on the eyes? Not a matter of brightness or text size. I bought the w540 and it is very uncomfortable in spite of being a 3k display, very sharp and with very vibrant colors. How would you describe the T440s’ AUO when reading black text on a white background? Is it comfortable?
Please help me decide. I am considering returning this w540 and buying a T440s because I must read and write for hours everyday.

I'm a programmer, so I don't use word and excel all day long. But I do look at relatively small black text on a white background many hours a day. I haven't found the AUO screen fatiguing. I do take breaks from time to time, so I don't know what would happen if you really stare at the screen for hours straight. I have my screen set to native res (no scaling in Win8.1), around 70% brightness, and an 11pt font in my IDE.

Thanks Peripatetic. The T440s seems to be my best alternative. Originally I wanted a bit larger screen, to be able to have one or two people sitting by me, looking at models in Excel, for example. I think the T440s will allow that, even if not in an ideal way.

A lot of Windows 8 laptops (most, even) do not have the COA sticker now that the key is hard coded into the system. You do (or very well should) have a valid key, though. You can usually pull it up via third party software.

So I can't quite find it in the old parts of this thread - I was using one of the more consumer oriented Lenovos with a clickpad (somewhat smaller than the T440s clickpad) and I noticed that it had a much deeper, much less annoying clicking sound (and a nice feel, honestly). I seem to recall there being talk of two different keyboard models for the T440s, one with a less annoying clicking sound (but maybe something else that wasn't as good? Don't recall.) Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

There was discussion about two keyboard model. One model was Chicony and the other was LiteOn. The discussion was referring to the keyboard and the travel distances and tactile feedback.

So I have a problem. I've put in a 128GB M.2 SSD (MyDigital) and had installed Windows 8.1 to that drive. The 1TB drive acts as data storage. I've been having LOTS of trouble with the WiFi on the T440s, and decided to reinstall Windows to see if it fixed the problem. However, now whenever I boot up from my recovery media (which I created when I first got the laptop using the Lenovo recommended method), I get an error saying "Unable to reset your PC. The system drive cannot be found". I disabled the cache drive (the 16GB M.2 ssd), but only but only after this problem first came up. On attempting to refresh, I get an error message saying the partition cannot be found.

Anyone have any solutions? Can I now never reset my machine?

No kidding. Just look over here: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T...ils-after-coming-out-of-hibernate/m-p/1753089 I'm thinking about selling this machine and looking into getting something else if this doesn't get fixed. HP biz machine (WITHOUT a 7260AC) or rMBP perhaps. I dug up a copy of 16.1.5.2, which supposedly works better, though even that's had some drops for me too in the little time I've used it. Might be worth noting that apparently you can get old driver versions here: Intel® PROSet/Wireless Software — Intel® PROSet/Wireless Software IT administrator links

That said, I didn't spend $1200 on a laptop just so I could get driver problems. I spent $1200 because I want a machine that just works, and doesn't fail in random ways. Looks like Lenovo doesn't understand that concept.

Edit: Apparently the 16.x versions on that link don't mention the 7260AC - yet those drivers were once released for that card. Only 17.x lists 7260AC for some reason...

Blame Intel. The 7260AC wireless adapter has been buggy for many laptops besides the T440s. You can always get a different wireless adapter.

I haven't seen a single complaint about 7260AC in Linux; perhaps I've overlooked them? It seems that some combination of Windows drivers and incorrect power management settings is more likely the culprit than the hardware, in my opinion.

Of course, there's the bios whitelist on internal wifi cards, so I'd have to go USB for that. Still amazing that Intel can't figure this out though, considering I have much older Intel wifi cards in other machines, and I've never had them drop. If it weren't for the form factor difference and BIOS whitelist, I would've tossed one of my wifi link 5100's (yes, a 2008-era card that is far more reliable than the 7260AC) in the t440s and called it a day.

FWIW, I have this card and also have excellent connectivity, so there must be something more to all this - perhaps a bad batch of cards or something.

The card generally works for me, but it likes to drop every now and then. Irritating.

What's your hardware ID (check in Device Manager)? Mine's

I'm not convinced there is anything wrong on Intel's end, almost certainly not with the hardware. Software, perhaps, but I think some people are looking for someone to blame without first investigating all of the variables.

Did you perform a fresh install of the OS or just use what Lenovo provided? My (arch) Linux install has been perfect with the 7620AC, but my Windows 8.1 clean install hasn't had a single problem either. I didn't install any of Lenovo's bloat, just manufacturer drivers on a clean base.

Ultimately, you're in charge of your satisfaction with your computer.

    Quick question.

What are the speeds that you guys get with the Intel 7260 AC.

I have a 1.0 Gbps fiber internet connection. Via ethernet I get 910 mbps speedtest.net results. Via Wi-FI I get about 370. My router is a Asus AC68U. Shouldn't I get faster speeds cosidering that the connection speed is 866?

My retina MBP wich is a 3x3 Wi-Fi card instead of the 2x2 Intel get about 600 mbps.

In installed all the latest drivers from lenovo or intel (tried both with same results).

It is hard to tell. Not many people have 1.0Gbps internet speed or a NAS that operate at 1.0Gbps so testing those speeds would be a challenge. You would also need someone with a wireless AC routers.

I'm looking at getting a T440s. How bad is the LG IPS 1080p vs AUO IPS 1080p display? and is it only the touch screen model that comes with the AUO display now?

Not really bad. I found the LG panel to be very usable. The only area where the AUO is better are the viewing angles if you tilt the screen back. The LG has much less backlight bleeding and doesn´t need to be calibrated like the AUO (which has a very warm color tone).

Do you by any chance know of any website that has a comparison?
I'm wondering if I should wait for the t540s or to buy the t440S now
