ThinkPad T440s Ultrabook Laptop | Lenovo | Lenovo (US)
Think this is the one we've been waiting for for folks.
Maybe this preview will prevent a few defectors going over to the MacBook camp (or others)
-
Looks like the trackpoint buttons went the way of the dodo. They finally got an IPS FHD to the T4xx!
-
T431s with an IPS HD+ and FHD IPS screen option oh yeah.
-
confused. Is T440s the successor to T430s? How about T440?
-
I don't believe it, you guys made it!! After long of complaints had been made toward the miserable display, finally you made lenovo stick the fricking IPS screen on 14" machine!!!
But this think might hurt T431s sales (who cares?). Hey, who can refuse IPS screen? -
and only 6 hours of battery? or is that on each of the 3 cells combining for 12 total?
-
Holy hell, I want this.
-
-no DVD/hdd ultrabay ?
-no leds for wlan, hdd ?
Well at least we got this feature (very nice btw):
Power Bridge Battery
The standard configuration of T440s includes (2) 3-cell batteries, one internal and one swappable. Power Bridge allows you to swap the rear battery without powering down your system. This is much needed for long flights or travelers who are away from power sources for an extended period of time. -
FHD = 1920x1080
HD+ = 1600x900 -
yeh thanks just checked for myself.
looks like i'll be going HD+ as windows 8 still doesnt scale well. wish it was 1440x900 IPS though. -
But knowing Lenovo's battery estimtaes, would probably only be around 4 hours per 3 cell. -
I'm curious, does anyone test the new trackpad? On the old one we got dedicated buttons for the mouse Wheel, so I can hold down or up that button forever. How it Works now? do I have to scroll my finger up and down all time or I just can hold it like the old way?
-
I've heard mixed reviewd of the touchpad. Some say you get used to it, others say it's awful and feels and sounds cheap and "clicky" if that makes sense. There is a good video here that shows the T431s with the new Touchpad in use and the reason they made it the way it is:
Lenovo Unboxed: ThinkPad T431s - YouTube
(Touchpad discussion begins around 4:50)
One concern I have is if they were able to keep the docking station port. The removable battery feature hopefully did not cause this to be removed. Lenovo is advertising their USB 3.0 dock which I had previously on an X1 Carbon. The dock had some lag when displaying high def signals on the multiple monitors. Don't think video emulation via USB is 100% there just yet.
My last "would love" feature would be if the T440s came with the same rubberized texture as the X1 Carbon series. That's a bonus though and not a "must have" -
I was all decided to get a Clevo W740SU...now back to waiting...
All I hope now is there will be regular CPUs too.. not just low voltage. -
Not sure I'll get this onethough...
VGA = wasted space. (mDP is nice though)
Hot Swap 3 cell battery = 6 hours better be on the one battery, more with the extra removable 3 cell.
Is it 3.5 or 3.6 lbs?
Lenovo Port replicator is a joke. I want a docking station.
NFC yay!
Everything hinges on the unreleased Tech Specs (mainly GPU)...which means they better be good. -
-
Well in that video the machine it's power off, so can't really see too much. I only saw this video with some seconds of use at min 11:35
Lenovo ThinkPad Helix Testbericht - Windows 8 Hybrid [Deutsch - German] - YouTube
What I'm most worried about is the scroll and the click&drag just with touchpad. Until someone correct me I think this new trackpad is a step backguard from where we come from.
Look what ppl say:
"And the Helix is an absolute horror. Lenovo is replacing the TrackPoint/Three Button setup with a Trackpoint and nothing to click on. The pad is an over-sensitive horror show. It's not possible to do any kind of position and click without the cursor moving just as you're clicking. There's no easy way to do click and drag. There click has become a tap… so you have to position the cursor, remove your finger from the trackpad, and then do a light tap to get the mouse click. I mean, what are you guys thinking?"
from Post: Win8 & Hardware: Going the wrong way -
Looks nice but using a trackpoint without the buttons seems weird. It is what it is.

I doubt this laptop will support high-resolution 1440p displays (will support them, but not very well) since it's being marketed as an Ultrabook. I'd love to run the 1080p display plus an external 1440p monitor (and still be able to playback 1080p/1440p/4K video on the monitor).
-
i really dont mind this resolution one bit, but would definitely take 1080p if windows scaled to the same size this 1440 screen displays things at natively.
i'm gonna go play around with my parents new 1080p vaio so if i can get things to display how i want. if i can get close i'll def go 1080p. windows 8.1 has better support for display scaling too i believe. -
Does anyone know how long from when a product is seen on the website for being on sale. I just had a discussion in another post about the length of time it would take for us to actually have a Haswell T series laptop. I used the fact that the T431s was announced in January but did not go on sale until April I believe. However, I don't think the T431s was seen on a website first it was announced at one of those conventions or so this may be a good thing for those of us wanting/needing to buy one for school.
-
Any chance of a. discrete GPU ?
-
I was hoping this design would be supplementing, rather than replacing, the "classic" T4x0s design. I personally found the previous design to be the best combination of flexibility, mobility, and upgradability on the market. I was hoping we'd continue to see both a T4x0s and a T4x1s when the T431s was announced, but with this machine being called the T440s, that doesn't seem to be the case. The 1080p IPS screen is a huge upgrade--it's a shame it won't be available in the old chassis.
The Power Bridge Battery sounds like a great feature, though I guess we'll have to see how it works in practice. If it completely depletes the removable batter before using the internal battery, the removable battery will probably lose capacity pretty quickly. Maybe it will do something like draw 70% power from the external battery and 30% from the internal battery. They'll need to work on the software for this, though--they didn't provide software to set up this kind of system with the ultrabay battery. -

Now that Lenovo has FINALLY moved to IPS on the 14" machines, it would seem the next Carbon and possibly others will follow suit. Looking forward to it.

I wonder if it's a glossy screen (the image looks like it, but it's obviously just a promo).
The internal + external battery idea is brilliant. I can't count how many times I have had to find a power outlet to swap out a battery without rebooting.
The inclusion of NFC is also interesting on a ThinkPad. -
Looks nice. There are quite a few fans of the T4x0s series in my office. I would expect that I'll be seeing a few of these showing up on our doorstep soon.
-
Just spoke with a rep. U.S. availability starting mid August =/ Not bad I suppose, but I was hoping for before August started
-
A *very* interesting offering indeed.
Likely Lenovo's best moment since the X20*s/X30* series.
No, I'm not going to be purchasing one, but if this ends up being the first 14" ThinkPad with a good LCD ever, I'll give credit where it's due.
Should that be the case, I could see the machine in question becoming very popular. -
But at the same time, there's no Quadro line up based on 700 series (none that I know of), I'm not sure. -
i wish the touchpad is configurable. so that we can choose trackpoint and clickpad only. or trackpoint with that absurd touchpad. geez

A bit more details on T440s in Chinese èæ³ ThinkPad T440s ç¬è®°æ¬çµè å ¨æ°Haswellå¹³å° 14寸 1080p 触æ§IPSå±å¹ 1.58åå 2.1åç±³å åçµæ± èæ³ç¾å½å®ç½ ä¿¡æ¯æ³åº ä¸å¸å¨å³_ä»·æ ¼ç½ -- you may see guts of this beauty with internal battery placed under the palm rest.
Plus, T440s and X240s are getting really close to start with this announcement Lenovo QuickControl for Windows 8 (32-bit, 64-bit) - ThinkPad T440s, X240s -
The internal pictures from the above link is actually that of the X230s. It was written in Chinese.

PDF manual. I substituted t440s for x240s from the x240s thread and got lucky. no luck with t540s though. -
4 june 2013 = landing page showed up without tech spec info
20 june 2013 = landing page was updated with tech spec info and it's open for sale
22 july 2013 = 1st shipping date -
And this is an Enterprise machine? again, lol. -
The good news is that the T440s has a dock connector. The bad news is that it is not the series 3 dock, so new docking stations are required and people with multiple ThinkPads are out of luck for a unified docking platform.
-
The cooling looks worse though. I always liked that little secondary vent on the back. I hope the T540/W540 will go to dual fan or at least retain the dual radiator/single fan layout.
Getting rid of the optical bay is a good step forward. Next is the hard drive! -
Backlit keyboard and ThinkLight. TrackPoint and TrackPad ( and touch screen). And the keyboard layout is bad. -
Well, I really hope they keep these and for a long time. After all, having the physical arrow keys and a separate pointing device is asking for optimization too.
With keyboard layout the madness goes on: X240s and T440s have different layouts, with X240s not having Insert key. Even though there is plenty of horizontal space in X240s, enough to put Power key next to Backspace (ingenious, beats Print Screen next to spacebar!). Why, oh why... -
I'm glad Lenovo is improving their screens, but one area they should also work on is their speakers. The X301 was the last ThinkPad I had with great speakers. The T440s appears to have the speakers at the bottom of the laptop so I don't have high hopes for great sound quality.
You would think that with the ever increasing importance of video and multimedia content that speakers would play a bigger role. Seems like everyone just includes them as an afterthought. Manufacturers love to show how loud their sound but clarity or warmth is never mentioned. Most speakers sound so tinny that it's hard to enjoy any media. Don't always want to bring up the X301, but just copy those speakers and you'll have come a long way. -
Any news on if these will have a dedicated GPU? Maybe the 760M?
-
Far more likely to be either no GPU, or some check-in-the-box GPU as has been the case with all 14" Thinkpads. -
Since it's being hailed as an "ultrabook," I'd imagine there will not be a discrete GPU option.
-
Rep said there will be discrete option from the 600GT series.
-
Saw this earlier and definitely was ready for them to take my money. Need some more information but looks like it's finally time to upgrade the T410s. (waiting for clarification on batteries)!
-
Really glad to see an investment in higher quality screens for the 14 inch models. Hopefully they will be spending more on QC for these as well.
-
Be nice if they can put a 45w quad and 35 w Kepler gpu in there. Should still be within 90w spec. -
Assuming the changes to the T440 are similar to the ones being made to the T440s, I may need to rethink my no new laptop until the current one is dead position.
-
I'm in it for the long-haul with this X220. Between the changes with Windows and Thinkpad, my next notebook will with all certainty be an Apple product, which are increasingly seemingly great on their own, not just as alternatives.
-
A thicker cheaper T440 with the same components inside would be very very weak product. Did anyone buy the T430 after the T430s came out?
