phamhlam, can you let me know where Lenovo said they were not going to release a T440s with discrete graphics in the US? Multiple Lenovo reps have confirmed their understanding that this option will be available, some have said they could not say when, others said 'in the coming months'. I'm planning to hold off my purchase of the T440s until it's available, but if it isn't going to happen I'd like to know that. Thanks.

I think the more enterprise features increase from the 4200 to the 4300. THe 4300 i5 i7 are more similar in the technologies like virtualization, TPM, and other security features.

Oh you know what, you're completely correct, the 4300U has everything I was thinking of (VPro, VT-d, etc). Hmm, glad I ordered that one! The 4200U is missing a lot of those features but I guess again for most people it's irrelevant. That's good to clear up then for others.

Funny a person posted this features a few days ago and a link probably and it had a list. I am a student but buying this student on my own. Usuallly, these features are offered on all student laptops so that IT on campus can do thinks like remote server help. SO that is the only reason I am upgrading. Also if I were to get a job that allowed me or required me to use my own laptop I know it would be approved with the 4300u. That option is important and can never be "upgraded" so I paying for that. But and SSD and a ram can make up for speed between a 4200-4300.

Can someone please give me a run down of the differences between the t440 and t440s? As far as I know, the t440s has better customizable settings (1080p display), but on the lenovo website, the t440 will run about $100-$150 cheaper given the same specs as the t440s

Funny document on this link. Looks like it came from Lenovo, yet completely omits the fact that the i3, i5, i7 in the T440s are "U" versions whereas those in the T440p are "M" versions. This is no small difference - the latter are way more powerful. Also says the T440P has HD 4400 graphics, when it in fact has HD 4600 - which likewise is more powerful.

    @MaX PL.
What do you mean? If your using the TrackPoint or if you are using just the TouchPad?

The TouchPad has specifical zones for left, right and middle-clicks for the TrackPoint (upper halft of the TouchPad) and zones for right and left clicks on the lower half (where the TouchPad buttons were). See:

One Review. Review Lenovo ThinkPad T440s 20AQ-S00500 Notebook - NotebookCheck.net Reviews

People in America have not received it them yet. And in Europe it's been mainly students. But they are anticipating it. If you google the Haswell laptops there are tons of articles on them.

Funny, there were and still are very few reviews on the T431s. As if if they or Lenovo knew they were going to be selling and even better version soon.

I think you missed the point of the discussion. It was not what IS sturdier but what FEELS sturdier. I had the X1 Carbon and the X301 side by side. Both are identical weight. The X301 felt more tank like and better constructed even though it weighs the same as the X1 Carbon. Don't know the reason, but could be numerous factors such as build material, hinges, balance of the weight, latching lid, etc.

Not sure which side of the scale the T440s will fall on. Hopefully closer to the X301.

Does anyone know why Lenovo offers a touchscreen for the T440 and T440s, but not the T440p? I ended up ordering the T440p because I want an optical drive and am not satisfied with the performance of he T440 or T440s.

I just got off a sales chat. The touch options will be available in December. I can't wait that long as my T61 died in September and I've been stuck using a junky Chromebook.

just to confirm, that means that the T440p model up on the website is a non-touch model??

also, has anyone been able to confirm for sure if the discrete graphics option is coming to the US at some stage for the T440s...

Well, finally had a chance to try out the keyboard and the new trackpad, albeit on a T440. The keyboard felt worse than that of the T430s the dealer had sitting next to it. Not as solid, perhaps even a little wobbly. Does the T440s have the exact same keyboard as the T440?

The new trackpad was what really bothered me though. It just felt weird. The whole thing sinks when you click on it. And makes a loud click when you do that too. I'm not sure I can get used to that. The whole thing just didn't feel solid to me.

I was all excited to get back to Thinkpads again too now that it finally has a decent screen again.

That is huge! On Tuesday it said ship dates was 11/21/13. For yours to be 11/5 means they are operating on the normal 10 day process and ship policy. That is great! I hope to order my at the end of the week. It would be nice to receive it before Thanks giving. Hey it is always better to promise later and deliver earlier rather than the other way around.
Keep us updated here. (unless people are making a shipping thread?)

Wobbly? You mean there was a lot of play in the keycaps themselves? I'm also worried about not liking the trackpad. Videos I've seen and comments like yours suggest its just a bit clunky overall, although I do usually tap to click on trackpad. How much resistance was there in the trackpad? Is it very easy to clunk....erm, I mean click? And how loud is the audible "click" compared to, say, the Apple trackpad?

I think you and anyone who is really worried about the trackpad should try to see if somehow you can play with one. Maybe if there is a major college somewhere you can walk into their computer store an check out a T431s. The clickpad is different/can take some getting used to. I played with a T431s a few times and. Technically it scared me so much I attempted to order at T430s but Lenovo botched those orders. If I had reattempted to reorder the T430s would not have arrived before I moved for school so I decided to wait it out with my 3 year old Edge.

Got to campus and was able to see the T431s and at around the same time the T440s was announced. The T431s' form factor, weight, and visual appeal was perfect. I then played with the trackpad more and said I could live (not necessarily adjust), but live with that if the screen I can get the weight, quality, keyboard, and now IPS screen.

    @Yuxie,
No, I am not a lefty. I am a Righty, but I can usw the Trackpoint with both hands. My right hand obviously was holding the camera.

I don't think it feels odd. I can clearly differantiate between the differt "buttons", because the small dots on the middle Button See still present. Without them, it would be difficult.

Wobbly in the sense that it felt like the T440 keys had a tiny bit of jiggly see-sawing action going on from side to side when I pressed down on them. Almost like they were a little loose on the mechanisms. Whereas the T430s keys were solid up-n-down only as I pressed them. I have to say that the T430s keyboard I typed on was a reasonable imitation of the earlier Thinkpad ones, and the T440 keyboard almost feels like one of the cheaper PS2 keyboards that they throw in when you buy a desktop where the keys are a little loosey goosey. I am hoping that maybe it's just an off sample, and that the T440s keyboard would be much more solid or T430s-like.

I'm not sure quite how to describe the new trackpad properly. The T430s trackpad had a very solid feel to it--nothing moved unless you made it move (i.e. the trackpad buttons). The T440 trackpad, on the other had, felt it almost could rattle on its own. It didn't really do that of course, but it's almost like feeling the difference between the thunk closing the door on a well-made German car vs. the hollowness made by a cheaper, less hefty model. This feeling may have been exacerbated by how little pressure it took to activate the click, and the fact that a large portion of the laptop's surface area just sank. I was also surprised by how loud the trackpad click was. Normally little click clacks don't attract my attention, but this was loud enough to make me take notice. It's probably as loud as the key click on a mechanical keyboard I'd say. Pressing the space bar on a run-of-the-mill computer keyboard would probably generate a close sound and feel.

I'm torn. I was all ready to order the T440s sight unseen. Good thing I wandered by the local dealer to check it out in person (well, the T440). I was really looking forward to getting back to the trackpoint, having been away from the Thinkpad for a couple of laptop generations. The IPS display is the major attraction of the T440s to me, but the other drawbacks (esp. the trackpad) are making me consider whether I might just get the T430s and perhaps put the X1 Carbon display on it should I find its original display unsatisfactory. Or just go get another laptop and wait for the next gen of the Thinkpads (T450s?) to see if anything changes.

    I know... very frustrating.

I just spoke to a sales rep who told me that they're not expecting to have the T440s for the UK until the New Year! And that applies to other resellers too. He said Lenovo are concentrating on the consumer market in the run up to Christmas.

I'm just going to work on the basis that they never really know what they're talking about re availability, and hold out some hope for a release soon.

That's going to be hugely frustrating if they're not going to be available in the UK until the start of next year, as it looks like Lenovo treat Europe as a single market for products, and that will affect me. I, for one, have been following this forum since there were only two pages (mid-July, I think) and am not prepared to wait much longer.

Lenovo are trying to copy Apple with the appearance of their laptops, and yet unlike Apple, who launch a product and make it available a day or two later, Lenovo seem to launch products and make them available half a year later. Remember the X1 that they announced in April or May of 2012 and which wasn't available to buy until September? Even then, if you wanted an i7 model you had to wait until November.

I sold my MacBook Pro in July with a view to my next laptop being lighter, cooler and lower-powered, and the T440s looked ideal (I actually sold it with the full intention of buying an X1). But with more and more information about, for example, the trackpad, or the standardised-but-no-one's-building-for-it 42mm M.2 slot, I'm very much being tempted back to the new, lighter (4.4lbs against the T440s' 3.8lbs) rMBP with its PCIe drive. [Particularly as I believe it's now possible to boot Win8 natively rather than via BootCamp.]

Yes, I know about replaceable batteries and so forth, but it looks to me like every laptop comes with compromises and I can't help but look at the MacBooks and see less compromises. And this is coming from someone who absolutely detests Apple.

A laptop buyer can only be expected to wait so long.

Yeah, Tuesday the 29th... Well, 12:30am on the 30th, but same thing... You can't base the ship date on what the store page says. Mine said "11/20/2013" but as soon as my order was being processed I had a date of 11/4.

I'm exactly in the same situation as you are, since I'm really happy about the first high-res thinkpad with a decent display since the flexview-days, but tried a 431s and the trackpad is a bad joke in my eyes.
I would recommend to take a closer look at the HP 840 G1, HP ZBook 14 and Dell Latitude 7440, they are are small and light 14"ers and have the same beautiful AUO AHVA-Display as an option ... and 'old-fashioned' trackpad-buttons :)

Thanks for the video. Shame there will no longer be silent trackpoint operation. The old buttons were near silent. I wish lenovo had at least put some sort of damper on the trackpad so the click sounds less like a hollow clunk.

Not sure I'll be able to try one out before buying. I'll hunt around local colleges.

yeah, this whole release has been a failure... How did they manage to screw it up so bad?

i was banking on getting a touch-enabled T440p to replace my FIVE YEAR OLD macbook. Even though i sort of promised myself that in order to be future-proofed enough, i would go for a high res screen.

Am now leaning towards either the ASUS UX301 or the Dell Precision M3800. The asus is slightly too small, and lacks some business-class features that a thinkpad-like machine would usually provide in the interest of shaving the weight off... the dell on the other hand is a bit too big and looks kind of ugly (in photos) but otherwise i'm happy with the hardware...

I just wish the Razer Blade 14 came with a 1080p IPS touch display when it was released in august!!! Would've solved ALL my problems, and I could have been using it already!!

OH, yeah, and the rMBP is another on my list.... even though i also swore to myself that my next laptop would not be a macbook unless apple redesigned the chassis and everything...

But as you point out - we find ourselves in the peculiar position that the rMBP has the most bang for buck with the least compromises overall. Apple's supply chain magic? i can't remember the last time i thought that was the case.

Most people buy whatever is available at the time. Most of us however are techies who want the latest and greatest. Apple has an amazing supply chain and with their large reserves of cash, they can get companies like Intel and get the best products at the earliest time. You also have to understand that all rMBP are premade unlike Lenovo which wants to provide users the ability to modify their laptop.
