Well the 500HB non touch version is back to being the cheapest. Disregard what I stated in the few posts above.

If you upgrade your HDD to a Crucial M500 SSD, you will want to make sure that it's upgraded to the latest firmware (MU03). It seems many/most are using the Samsung drives, but Crucial is another option (especially for the 960GB).

It's definitely more painful getting into the unit to upgrade things than previous ThinkPads were. I probably spent ~45 minutes with 3 plastic and 1 metal spudger. I think I ended up with one latch broken (one very small piece of plastic extra), but no scratches.

I have the Samsung 840. This is the last gen version that the EVO replaced. I have no problems with it. I would go with the Pro now just for the extra speed but the i5 never tax it enough.

If you buy the laptop with the 500 GB HDD they automatically add a 16 GB M.2 Solid State Drive Single which they said "The Micro SSD occupies the system's PCIe Mini Card slot"
    what exactly is that?

It basically just acts as a cache for the hard drive.

840 EVO 1TB. No issues so far.

Yup, it's a cache drive with the platter drive. We swapped in our own SSD's so I repurposed it for deep sleep which keeps that 12GB partition off the main drive.

Have you had a chance to see if you can make the M.2 SSD appear as a second drive yet? Were there any issues with drivers to uninstall/reconfigure when you stopped using the cache?

    It's pretty straightforward, see http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=9463206

No ill effects observed thus far.

So I have a problem. I've put in a 128GB M.2 SSD (MyDigital) and had installed Windows 8.1 to that drive. The 1TB drive acts as data storage. I've been having LOTS of trouble with the WiFi on the T440s, and decided to reinstall Windows to see if it fixed the problem. However, now whenever I boot up from my recovery media (which I created when I first got the laptop using the Lenovo recommended method), I get an error saying "Unable to reset your PC. The system drive cannot be found". I disabled the cache drive (as OP pointed out) but only after this problem first came up.

Anyone have any solutions? Can I now never reset my machine?

I remember encountering this problem. Do you another copy of Windows that you can boot from? I remember I had to install a different copy of Windows 8 on my computer than restore the computer using the recovery media.

I do, and I can boot from it, but I was just wondering if there was a way to restore to a pure factory state.

Hello, I will be buying a T440s very soon(possibly on CyberMon.), and I want to minimize cost while maximizing performance by buying the FHD non-touch with 8.1, i5-4200U, 4GB, 500GB model, and then buying 8GB crucial RAM with a 128GB m.2 SSD. I want to add the ssd onto the "3rd m.2 SSD Slot" and install the OS as well as other programs onto it while using the 500gb hdd for file storage. Is this a plausible solution? How do I copy the OS onto the new ssd? Will the 16gb m.2 still cache for the HDD?

    Thanks in advance! :)

    Tim
