    Hey all,

I have a T440s that my touchpad stopped working. Only the trackpoint buttons work. I went to mouse settings and the touchpad option is greyed out with no option to activate. Don't know why this is happening. I believe it is a software issue.

Called Lenovo they had me dow load touchpad drivers. That did not help. Decided to send me a new palmrest as I have onsite. Tech says the new palmrest takes over an hour to replace but more importantly he says it won't fix my problem. that is a software issue. He is just getting started at the time of this post.

    Any idea what's causing this?
Could it be my BIOS update. It is definitely software related.

I'd try booting a "live" Linux CD/DVD/USB prior to deciding whether it's a hardware problem or a software bug.

If I were a betting man I'd suspect hardware.

    Good luck.

Thanks for the reply.Tech did not replace the palmrest because spent time working on software attempts. Installed and then re-installed driver a few times. Saw the cursor move with the touchpad a few times. Restarted and did not work. Tech said I might want to try a recovery install. He says if I call Lenovo they may ask me to Depot. Depot for 5 days (or more?) or Recovery re-installation in hours? What would you do?

    Linux like I stated above.

If the touchpad works, re-install the OS and hope for the best.

If not, it's a hardware failure and you shouldn't be messing with it if the machine is under warranty.

    Good luck.

You don't have to have much of an idea.

Download the CD/DVD, burn it as an ISO file, boot from it.

The touchpad will either work or it won't. End of story.

    Good luck.

    One possible choice:

    Download - Linux Mint

I'm not certain that I understand the "how" portion of your question.

Just downloaded the cinnamon linux ISO file and the windows/usb dvd download tool says it is not a valid ISO file.

EDIT: Make that two version of Linux not recognized.

    Try ImgBurn, it's free...

    The Official ImgBurn Website

Can't walk you through the creating of a bootable USB since I always boot from media drives, be it internal or external.

    Good luck.

Thanks. Got someone else to boot LInux for me. As I expected, it is a software issue because the touchpad works in Linux.

Before you try a recovery install and wipe everything, try completely uninstalling the touchpad driver. Open up Device Manager and uninstall all drivers associated with the touchpad, and then download and install the latest drivers from Lenovo. If that doesn't work, you may just have to reformat.

Just for future reference, you should be able to burn a linux ISO with the Windows ISO utility (NOT the Windows 7 USB download tool). There's also YUMI for thumb drives, although that doesn't always work the way I want it to.

This is awkward. The semester just ended so I finally got a change to Restore my laptop to factory settings in an attempt to fix the problem. Turns out the trackpad still does not work after a clean install. Once again the option for the trackpad is grayed out. I don't understand why that is?
