I'm guessing that the embedded ram is running at 1600 or higher. I'm going to just suffer through a few days of 4gb, and upgrade with a stick with the same speed and timings as whatever is in my machine when I get it.

I am in the same boat.

The soldered T440s RAM runs at 1600.

As per the the Compatibility Matrix spreadsheet, the RAM for T440s and T450s should be interchangeable.

    I have the T440s and I am using this one: CT102464BF160B, DDR3L 1600
I also ordered a T450s and for that I have ordered this: BLS8G3N169ES4, Ballistix Sport, [email protected]
Would like to hear what others have done (or will do).

    Cheers!!!

I don't know what I'm doing about the memory yet, although I've ordered the Thinkpad in question with 4GB onboard RAM. As I understand, the 8 GB extra module I'm looking for should be meeting most of the following requirements: DDR3L - SDRAM 1600MHz (1 SoDIMM) PC3L-12800, [email protected], 204-Pin Memory.

    There's a whole forest of memory on Amazon.co.uk: DDR3L at 1.35 volts, DDR3 running also at 1.35 volts, PC3L-12800, PC3-12800, PC-12800,single or dual channel. I admit I'm a bit confused.

The 4GB card in my T450s is running at 1600, Cl-11, I bought this card to bump the system up to 12GB, and its thus far running great in dual channel mode.

Thanks. Although I understand two different RAM sizes (4GB+8GB) cause the setup to run in asymmetric dual channel mode, which translates into the first 8GB running dual and the remaining 4GB of the 8GB module running single.

Thanks, I think that's what I will order. By the way, is the RAM easy to install? I only see youtube videos on how to open T440s, wonder if T450s is anything similar.

I recommend getting a case opening kit with plastic spudgers. You'll need to unscrew the bottom casing, but then work your way around the case (starting from the back) prying it open. Once its open, the ram is as easy to install as on any computer. There are youtube videos showing how to do this, but i'm guessing its similar to the T440s.

Correct. Which can be a significant performance hit depending on what you're doing.

Can you explain this? Im at 8gb and considering the jump to 12gb but besides the con of having to open the machine id like to see what other tradeoffs there are.

Thanks for that. Question is now if its worth upgrading from 8gb to 12gb

That depends on what you will be doing.

For most uses there's insufficient gain from 4GB additional memory, which the OS will use mostly for disk caching, to offset the processing performance loss. A fast SSD (like the Samsung 850) will have much more performance benefit.

One use case that can benefit from from additional memory is complex video editing with 64-bit software. But even there, I've found 8GB sufficient for even 4K Ultra HD.

It's really a shame that Lenovo offers only 4GB soldered ("penny wise and pound foolish"); otherwise 16GB would be a good option given the low cost of memory. :(

Thank for that. I will stay with what i have then. It will be mainly a work machine. I am a financial advisor so it may be used to vpn into my broker dealer and run thompson one trading platform with outlook and contact managers programs open things like that. How doesnthe 256ssd hd that comes from the factory perform?
I opted for the i-7 8gb and 256ssd so off sto k it would be pretty good to go

I agree you're good to go. The factory SSD is fine, and differences in SSD speed aren't significant in any event unless you get a really poor one.
