Hey guys,
I'm in the midst of replacing my trusty X300 and I am looking for some input: i'm going to buy the laptop from ok1.de, so i was wondering, if i should get the i5 version or the i7? Both are FHD, 12GB of RAM and 3+3 cells. Should i spring the extra 300 euros for the i7 or is it not worth it ? How much is the performace difference between the i5 and the i7 version.
I am mostly doing programming on it and the occasional HD video.
Thanks in advance

Imo, the I7 is not really worth it as you aren't going to notice any performance increase . Save your money and get the i5 5300u which is faster than the prev generation i7 series.

I second that.
From cpubenchmarks
i5-4300U 3758
i5-5300U 3972
i7-5600U 4400
In general, the performance improvement is not worth $300.
I am a new T450s owner and went with the i7 (from previous T440s, i5-4300U) , since for some of the numerical computing work, the extra 17-20% improvement was worth it for me.
Cheers. -
Unless you're running your CPU at or near capacity most of the time, some do, it won't make much of a difference. Investing in a SSD is a better investment of your funds.

hmm, on the ok1.de page, the only i5 is i5-5200u. How much is the difference between i5-5200u and 5300u. Should i ask for the 5300u version ?

The 5300 has better virtualization capabilites. Only reason I can think of.

I thought the 5300 and 5200 had the same virtualization capabilities as per the link below. The vT-x and vT-d, both are present.
This is unlike the previous generation, where in the 4200U did not have vT-d, but the 4300U did have them both.

Would like to hear some clarification on this. -

My bad, I just assumed the 5200 and 5300 were like the 4200 and 4300. Looks like Intel fixed that. Thanks for the heads up. That'll save me $100 if I buy a 450 series or the X1 Carbon Gen 3.

so i shouldn't spring for the 5300u ?

I suppose the 5200U should work. I just checked cpuboss.com and it confirms the Virtualization support on the 5200U.
The 5300U has the following extra features - SIPP, TSX and VPro, which I assume are more geared towards Enterprise (though I still confused as to what the SIPP and TSX have to offer).
It would be good to get some first hand info from i5-5200U owners. -

The 5200u lacks Trusted Execution Technology. I thought that was required for Hyper-V but I might have that wrong.
