    Hello,

What are the differences? It seems to me the T40, T41 and T42 are quite similar, while the T43 came with a new chipset and a faster bus.

If I am to get a used one, which one is a better option? I think I only care about the SXGA+ screen -- other specs should work fine for me.

    Thanks.

    Jim

They changed processor revisions, motherboard chipsets, graphics chips, and the T42 added a fingerprint reader.

For practical purposes there is not a huge difference.

The Hitachi hard drives on the T41/T40 were famous for crashing... I lost 2 or 3. I also had my LCD blow on myT41. These things were all replaced under warranty

Get the T42. The hard drives were fixed, and it runs cooler than the T43 and lasts a wee bit longer on battery (albeit with slightly less power). BTW the fingerprint thingy was optional and not on every T42.

OTOH, a used T42 will be 2 yrs old so I'd be concerned about the battery. The T43 battery will be about a year newer.

I will buy a refurbished machine from IBM or some outlets on eBay. They carry a few months warranty. I am not sure about the battery, and will paobably assume it is bad and plan on buying a new one.

A SXGA T42 could be had at $800. Campraed to a T60, it is $500
    saved.

I've read from owners that the used certified IBM units come with very good batteries. google and see for yourself.

I have a reconditioned battery in my T41 (a bit older than the T42's obviously). It's the 9 cell model and I generally get 4-5 hours of battery life when I am discharging it completely to recondition it (in other words everything is turned on and all the way up to drain it as fast as possible).
