I've been looking into the T400, T400s and T500. I'm confused why all the popularity is surrounding the t400/s models and barely anyone talking about the 500. What is the reason for this?

even less common are X300 or X301. You never hear anyone talk about those systems at all. Same thing goes for the W series. It just shows T400 is the more popular choice among most users that happen to frequency these forums, or perhaps this is also true for the general public.

The 14" T series has historically been the flagship of the ThinkPad line.

Exactly. The reality is, most business users do not need a powerful 15" laptop. Mobility and battery life are far more important - performance has, for businesses at least, remained the domain of the desktop computer.

    You know, I'm a Thinkpad user as I have a 15" t61p.

I use Thinkpads because they are the best computational engine going not
because it has anything to do with business. I have a Thinkpad because my business is computer software. I need a powerful laptop. I need perfomance and this is the reason I chose a Thinkpad. Why did I chose a 15 inch? It wasn't an accident. I chose a 15" because every once in a while, I like to watch a movie "in between".

I too have a 15" Thinkpad - the T500. Although there obviously is a certain demand for more powerful 15" laptops, it is not as large as the demand for a solid, affordable, multipurpose 14" business laptop, which is why the T400 is more popular than the T500.

This trend is not limited to Thinkpads; the Latitude E6400 for example is far more prevalent than the E6500.

I too have a 15" ThinkPad, but I think the 14" T series notebooks sells much better due to the better mobility. The T series didn't even get a 15" version on until the T42.

I own a T500. The feature I love most is the WSXGA+ screen, lots of screen real estate, great for multi tasking and watching movies. The discrete graphics offered is also much better than the T400 and is good for playing almost any games, i also love the switchable graphics that allows me to switch to intel graphics to save power. The display port addition is also excellent. The 9 cell can easily get me 6-7 hours of battery

Other than that, the rest of the features can be configured the same, So with the same amount of power i feel no difference in taking the t500 over t400.

My next Thinkpad purchase will likely be a T4XXs for its much lighter profile, LED screen and a display port to connect to an external IPS monitor.
