Since I noticed in the stickied thread that a lot of people are having troubles with their ThinkPads and Win7 so far, would it be advisable to wait until Windows 7 is being officially installed/shipped to order my T500, or are these all issues that we should expect to be easily corrected by future driver updates? Also, with the current sale ending October 21st, is there reason to believe that the upcoming Windows7-packaged laptops will rise again in price with the increased demand?
My planned configuration is as follows:
Intel Core 2 Duo Processor P8600 (2.40GHz 1066MHz 3MBL2) 25W
Genuine Windows Vista Business 64
15.4" WSXGA+ TFT, w/ CCFL Backlight
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X4500HD
4 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM 1067MHz SODIMM Memory (2 DIMM)
UltraNav (TrackPoint and TouchPad)
Integrated Camera
320 GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm
DVD Recordable 8x Max Dual Layer, Ultrabay Slim (Serial ATA)
7 in 1 Media Card Reader
Integrated Bluetooth PAN
Intel WiFi Link 5100 (AGN) with My WiFi Technology
6 cell Li-Ion Battery

you can save your order for 30 days... so you can configure a laptop now, and if you don't like how things go with price and options when the Win 7 is officially released, you can always pull out the saved order on Lenovo.com.

Pretty good idea, I'll probably do that- so they would still likely honor the cart, even if it ends up that they pull Vista from laptops following the Win7 release?
Also, part of the reason I was curious about current T500 compatibility is because I'm currently in school and have a laptop that is detaching at one hinge of the screen and currently has no ability to detect its battery (screen has been having issues for awhile, but battery issue appeared and screen was made much worse when I accidentally dropped my laptop bag about 3-4 days ago)- so I guess part of my curiosity about compatibility is stemmed from the fact that if the T500 issues will all eventually be resolved, maybe I will lean towards purchasing it now rather than waiting another 4-5 days (out of fear that my current laptop will completely break down). Would they likely be changing any of their hardware with the Win7 release to improve compatibility? Or is it likely to be all resolved by software/driver updates? -
Unlikely you'll see any hardware changes related to Win7.
You need to save as a Quote for the cart to be kept; I wouldn't count on it otherwise. Quotes are good for that exact config and price for 30 days; no changes allowed. No obligation on your part either, so multiple quotes are not a problem.
I don't know about T500, but the only Win7 trouble on my T400 is that the most recent beta hybrid graphics drivers use a lot of extra power. Locking the system to integrated graphics in the BIOS is an okay workaround as I rarely/seldom need the discrete GPU. Otherwise everything seems to work fine. (I ran the RC version for a couple months and now the RTM version for the last couple months) -
Cool, thanks guys =)
I ended up calling in on the phone to pre-order the exact same config with Win7. She said that the computer I'm ordering will come with the Lenovo "Windows 7 Experience" version of software, so I assume that means they're not really changing much (if anything) about the hardware after the release.
Thanks for the help and input! -
Maybe ensure with Lenovo that it is configured with 64bit Win7; otherwise the 4GB ram won't utilize all that ram?

Eh?
No problems with my ThinkPad and Windows 7. Runs quite nicely. -
I downloaded 64 bit, Windows 7 in a 4 gigabyte t61p and has never had it as much as a hiccup.

Good to hear, thanks guys for the additional info =)
And thank you for the tip- I did however double check about 5 times that it was coming with a Full version of Win7 Professional 64-bit! -
The only problem with Win 7 is that when you still use old, favorite softwares which are not compatible. I tried Win 7 on my T61 and could not install some of my favorite music production softwares.
