hey all, I received my t500 yesterday. It's nice. The only issue I have so far is that it makes a suttle relatively high pitched computer noise pretty much constantly. It flickers on for like 0.5 - 1 second, then off for 0.5 - 1 second, it's actually quite annoying. Is this normal? What can I do about this? Is there something inside that is vibrating and touching something else or something like that? thanks.

It might be the HD spinning. The T500 runs relatively quiet so you can hear the little things that are going on inside (disks spinning).

Approximately where is the noise coming from? Under the right palmrest? Under the left speaker area?

looks like it is coming from the area from the left to the middle part of the keyboard.

actually, it sounds like it is coming from everywhere, not specifically in one area. quite annoying!!

hey I have a relatively new T500 and no noise coming from my laptop itself, though annoying sounds do come from my AC adapter

The only thing I always here on mine is the hard drive. It's a 7200 RPM, and I think they're a little louder than 5400 RPM HDD. That said, it is still quiet. The fan rarely runs, and it is fairly quiet when it does, unlike my HP Pavilion. The fans on the HP sound like they're in turbo mode and it is still toasty. The TP, on the other hand, is exceptionally cool.

It could be your hard drive. The Seagate Momentus 7200 HDD in my HP emits a high pitch sound, perhaps three of them, every so often. Whatever the noise is in your computer is, it's not normal.

yeah sometimes the sound isnt there and its all quiet..... all i can hear is a soft sound of my pc running.

the sound is constantly on and not like how i described it above...... sometimes goes away for a slight period and comes back.

are there any settings i can play around with to alleviate some of this noise?

    what should i do?

wow i figured it out. It has to do with the energy performance of the laptop. on high performance the sound is bad. I put it on energy saver and the sound has been reduced to like 10%.

I did some research around the internet and it seems like the noise comes from when the computer is being used in low energy states, and thus putting the settings to high performance should eliminate the sound..... i did the exact opposite to eliminate the sound. odd. But i'm happy it's almost completely gone!!

Try changing the brightness of the screen.

If the pitch of the noise changes along with screen brightness then it's probably the inverter.

Sounds like you found a fairly acceptable workaround, but I don't think you should be satisfied with that. I've had my T500 on daily, all day, for over a week and I've never heard that sound, regardless of setting. I would want the problem completing solved at the beginning. Would not Lenovo replace it?

Some people can't hear the high-pitched noise, particularly older people. Not sure how old you are though.

I have pretty sensitive ears. Eyesight--now that's another matter. My HP has a high-pitched noise created occasionally by the hard drive, and then there's the noise that a lot of computers had (have?) when the C2D's came out. My TP, on the other hand, produces only the whir of the HDD and the occasional fan coming on.

    54, BTW.
