T500 (and 400?) with switchable graphics are not able to get Win 7 SP1 through Windows Update because of a faulty Intel 4 driver. Does this also affect the installation of IE9?

I think it would affect it, because the problems with the intel driver were noticed when IE9 Beta was installed. IE9 installs updates that conflict with the Intel driver.

What's the problem with down loading and re-installing the driver?

The Intel driver is part of a switchable graphics that has VERY poor support from Lenovo. I hope that they will release a new driver soon to address the issues, but it was about 1.5 years or so before the latest driver was released. I would like to try IE9, but am not willing to take the risk of GPU conflicts or roll back to a 2009 driver.

Have you actually installed IE9? And do you switch between drivers or stick to one? If you use the dedicated gpu, and have problems with the intel, maybe disable switchable, and run the dedicated gpu all the time?

IE9 works fine on my switchable graphics T500, running Windows 7 Professional 64. The only thing that doesn't seem to work is hardware rendering--you may have to tweak the registry to force the use of the GPU. I have not upgraded to SP1.

IE9 is working fine on my Optimus T410s but it's set to discrete only, and therefore NVIDIA only right now.

My T410 has Win 7 (No SP1 yet) and IE9 while my X301 has Win 7 SP1 and IE9, so I think IE9 will install with or without SP1.

Btw, I did not use Windows update to run SP1. I downloaded the .iso version and extract the 64bit part.
