is it worth it to upgrade the ram to 4gb and the hard drive through lenovo or should i just buy the basic stuff and buy parts from newegg or something and upgrade myself?

Ordering RAM separately from lenovo is cheper than any of the new egg options, check cpp site.

as for HDD, it is way better to buy outside lenovo

I'd recomend changing away from seagate as other disk manufacturers got patents on disk silencing that seagate did not.

Is this still the case since DDR3 RAM can be expensive?

Yeah, that's what I meant as well, but you answered that question. Thanks. I was just wondering because the other day, I saw 2X2GB DDR3 RAM for over $100 on Newegg before shipping.

I got a 2GB DDR3 module from newegg for $54 for my new T500. Lenovo wanted an extra $140 for this same amount to be added when building the machine.
