Hello!
What kind of difference (if any) can I expect between a T500 with a T9600 CPU and a 7200 rpm HDD and a T500 with a P8700 CPU and 5400 rpm HDD when in terms of heat and noise?
Regards

Also, do you think it's worth upgrading from P8700 to T9600 (about $100 extra) or should I maybe upgrade to P8800 instead ($45 extra) or just go with P8700? Difference in terms of heat?

For the average user 5400rpm HD are more than enough, the only improvement over it will be in system startup & program loading times...
I wouldnt upgrade to the T9600. You wont see much of a performance increase, about 0-11% The 6mb cache really doesnt do much.
If you consider about gaming, I would get the 7200 RPM. How much extra is is it?
Since the T9600 has a thermal TDP of 35 compared to the p8700 of 25, the latter will use more power at full load... Which leads me to believe the T9600 will run hotter -
thanks for your reply! The 7200 rpm 320 GB HDD is about $40 extra from the 5400 rpm 320 GB HDD upgrade option. The 7200 rpm HDD is only availaible in 320 gb at Lenovo.com...
(Stewie Griffin: I did notice that you have lenovo with a T-series CPU and 7200 rpm HDD, any special reason for choosing that?) -

ah 40 bucks... That is a hard one. To me 40 bucks is not that much. Still I would stick with the 5400. I have a 7200 RPM HDD and to be perfectly honest, I dont see any difference

I would recommend the low-voltage CPU and faster HDD.

I have a P-8600 and a 320GB 7200RPM HDD and the computer runs really cool, especially compared to my HP. I hear the HDD's soft sound, and it may be a bit louder than a 5400RPM, but my fan kicks in so rarely that I'm almost surprised when it does so.
