Hello All. I've been using my T520 with the FHD screen for a while now and it's an amazing laptop (except for the infamous pulsing fan).

However, I've always noticed that it takes the screen some time to transition from the darks to the brights (or would it be more correct to say "from black to white?"). It's not a matter of milliseconds, which the response time is usually measured in, but probably about 1 or 2 seconds.

Anyway, I was wondering if this is actually the specs of the screen or is it software-related (e.g. image rendering by Windows or drivers).

To test if you have this "effect", you can use a very dark/black wallpaper/background. Create a notepad file on the desktop and right click it. Allow some time for the screen to adjust to the black background. Choose delete and observe the delete dialogue window. It should be grayish and the notepad icon in it should appear very low contrast/fuzzy. In a second or two, it should turn "normal" with the dialogue window now being white and the icon getting more contrast.

Alternatively, you can simply allow a few seconds for the display to adjust to the dark scheme and then open a bright webpage or app window (e.g. Word).

Do you guys have the same peculiar behavior of the screen or is it my eyes playing tricks on me? If you also have it, do you think it is software-related?

NB: This is not something that should be of any significant concern to anybody thinking of getting the FHD. The FHD is the worthiest upgrade you can get. But it would be nice to know that this was something software-related and could be corrected.

Not sure exactly if this is the same thing I get with my T420 or not but I've noticed whenever I install something (you know windows does that blinking thing with the bleep noise to confirm to install as admin) the screen from the blinking dims the screen (black) and when it comes back up (after I choose "continue") it looks like its slowly getting back to full brightness.

I just shruggled this off as it was a minor thing but it sounded very similar to what you were experiencing on your T520.

No it's not related to the blinking that you get from the UAC. It's a gradual transition while the screen goes from dark colors to bright colors or vice versa. The "effect" is constantly present, and not only when I install something. Thanks anyway.

Is it the Intel/NVidia power saving thing kicking in?

looks like it might be an issue on your end, i'm not noticing the issue on my W520 while on AC with max performance or on battery with max battery life

Try disable Intel® Display Power Saving Technology (Intel® DPST) under Power settings in Intel GMA graphics options. Hopefully that should solve your issue.

Thanks namaiki and everybody. Switching to Maximum Performance under Intel Controller Power Settings seems to have solved the problem.
