Hi I recently bought a refurbished T530 from Lenovo outlet.

Each time when I close the lid, the computer goes into sleep. When I open the lid, the screen is on. This is how 99% times for this T530. This is how the computer's power management is configured.

However, in two cases, when I opened the lid, the screen was not on (or may be on but completely dark???). In these two cases, I was able to turn on the backlit of the keyboard, which indicated to me that computer was working. But the screen was completely dark. What I had to do was press the power button over 5 seconds to brute-force shut down the computer in order to be able to use it again.

    Any thought on this?

    Cheers.

Today, this happened ago on my T530. I opened the lid. The power button was on because the it was lighted. The back-lit keyboard was able to in different back-lit states. The battery power was almost 100% full. However, the screen was black and it appeared was off. I had to shut down the machine by pressing the power button for a long time.

    What could be the cause?

    Thanks.

One reason the screen is "black" is that the system is not awake to write anything to the screen.

Have you tried pressing a key, sliding a finger on the trackpad, or moving the mouse (if one is used)?

There is a tiny sensor on the left side of the screen, underneath the plastic bezel that frames the display panel, that signals "sleep" on contact (lid closed) and "wake" on break (lid opened). This sensor might be flaky. Just a thought.

(One time, I replaced the screen and, in the process, detached that sensor from its tiny base. It was held down by weak glue. I had to fumble with it a few times before it did it job on both closing and opening the lid.)

Yes. I tried many keys and combinations, including what you mentioned. This is really intriguing to me.

Is this "tiny sensor" documented in any Lenovo publications? I looked at that place and failed to find anything that could be a sensor.

    Thanks!

Which place? Did you physically remove the LCD bezel assembly? And to do so, you must undo 3 screws. And to undo those screws, you must remove the 3 tiny square black plastic covers, just above the hinges.

Repeat: on the left side of the screen, underneath the plastic bezel that frames the display panel.

The sensor is mentioned in a diagram on page 109 of the T530/W530 Hardware Maintenance Manual.

Thanks for all the info. Will look to see whether I can remove it. I never removed any LCD bazel assembly before.

    Thanks, again!
