In order to compare the write quality of the two different DVD burners offered for the T60 (UJ-842 and GSA-4083N) I burned several DVDs and scanned them with Nero CD-DVD speed. I've also included the results of my desktop Plextor 504A as a reference. The media used was 8x DVD+R Ritek R03. The Matshita would only allow 2.4x write speed. The Plextor and LG were both burned at 4x write speed. Nero 7 was used for the burning. The LG drive had firmware version 1.08. While it's been reported that the Matshita is very picky with media, the fact that neither the Plextor or LG had trouble with the Ritek is very revealing.
Besides the write quality, I feel that the LG drive has a better feel when closing the tray. The Matshita seems to offer too much resistance. I also like the fact that firmware updates are readily available for the LG drive while it is non-existent for the Matshita.
The first thumbnail (from left to right) is the Matshita. The second thumbnail is the LG. The third one is the Plextor.

If you are burning lots of stuff, you're usually better off with external desktop drive.

What is the software you are using?
I had problems using nero 6 with my matsushita, same model as yours.
when i use nero 7, its done 4 different dvd brands all at max 8 x speed
2 dvd +rs 2 dvd -rs
tdk,sony,fuji brands
I do believe the lg doesnt even reach that speed in in specs it does dvd x 6 or something with some media.
models always change but i do believe the matsushita 850 is actually the very top of the line dvd multi drive on earth actually. -
my uj-850 just died on me days ago... now i'm waiting for the replacement to come.
