Hi guys I currently have a T42 that I am very happy with but I am debating to make the leap to a T60. My one concern was in regards to fan noise. My T42 has fan noise which is unbearable, it is not so much how loud the fan is but the way it pulses every 5 seconds. If anyones ever been in a quiet room with one of these things you can understand. It's not a constant sound and thats the *worst* thing. Can anyone please offer insight on how their T60 is in regards to this matter? I run notebook hardware control on my T42 non-stop just to lower the cpu and keep the fan OFF since it is so distracting on the T42.

    Thanks!

You think that is bad.. you should hear my C100. Right now out here in Cape Cod, with 90% humidity, and about 70F,the fan is constantly on.. at like 50-75% speed.

NHC can cause issues with the power management and fan controls on IBM/Lenovo machines. It makes my C100 stay at 99% charged if left on, and on the z60m and t60, it would lock the hardware temp away from the itnernal controls, and it would have issues overheating, or be off.. and go full speed out of nowhere. I would suggest using the thinkpad fan control program, and lock the fan speed on, but at a lower speed like 10-20%.

No laptops can function well with a fan off, unless they are passively cooled like most of the Panasonic Toughbooks. Doing it otherwise makes not-fun hotspots, and really overheats the entire system.

If you disable the temperature monitor inside NHC it does not conflict with the heat sensors read by the bios. I recommend using dynamic switching so your cpu stays throttled to 600mhz until your system load goes up which results in a ramping up of the clock speed automatically by NHC.

    Cheers

P.S. if anyone has any insight on the initial question poised in this thread please contribute!

I have a T60. The fan is there, the sound may be detectable to the ear if tuning in very carefully for it, but it's probably even quieter than the hard drive. Unintrusive. No pulsing at all.
