I just received my T60 15" Flexview today and am very impressed with it except for this whine that the fan makes whenever it is on. The fan itself is quiet, but this high-pitch whining noise is really annoying. TP Fan Control doesn't help because the fan is already running quiet. Does anyone know what causes the whine or know any type of fix for this? Would installing a new/different fan help? I don't want to have to sell this otherwise great system because of this, but it is really annoying the hell out of me.

Do you have a core 2 Duo? I have heard of this happening with C2D notebooks, its basically a feature that is known as speedstep unless I am mistaken. Disabling the feature has drastically reduced the whine from what I have heard.

I have a T2500 Core Duo in my T60. I don't believe it is coming from the processor, but what is the speed step that you mention and how can you disable it?

I have not heard about the speedstep thing; not discounting, just ignorant.

Speedstep is a way the processor throttles to reduce heat/battery life.

You should be able to enable/disable it in the BIOS for testing.

I don't have a whine from my 14.1" T60 with a t2500; you may want to request a different fan to try if the Speedstep thing doesn't work.

I don't think it is the speedstep thing because it ONLY does it when the fan turns on, it sound like the fan.

How hard is a new fan to install? Would Lenovo send one out to me if I told them about this problem? I just bought this and I beleive I have the standard warranty that comes with the machine.

I don't know how hard it is to install a fan, you may have to send the computer to them or have someone come to you. Call and ask! Be polite, but firm. You have at least a 1 year warranty and possibly a 3 year.

I noticed a noise on mine similar to what you described. But mine only does it when playing a video in WMP11. As soon as I pause it, it goes away.

Anyone here with experience or knowledge in replacing a T60 fan or opening it up and modifying it? Possibly putting some noise dampening paper in there?
