Sorry, I am a newb and need help!

I have a 1.5 year old T60 that froze for the first time three days ago and had a 'corrupted file" message - a system file. I brought the T60 in to a local repair shop (I think they are Lenovo certified), the tech used the ThinkVantage built in stuff to back up my data to my ext HD, and then did a factory restore (is that called "clean install"?) and reloaded Office Pro Suite and printer drivers etc. I did the Windows Update that night.

So now the Office Pro applications (so far, Excel, Word) have a "non-commercial use" in the header. Someone suggested that I call Microsoft about this. There was no such header before. it is a legal upgrade copy of the Pro suite purchased 1.5 years ago. How do I fix this? Or is it even a problem?

And worst, the T60 froze again today! Ctrl+Alt+Del did not fix it, I had to hold down the on/off button. It did start up okay. What's causing the freezing!?!??! How do I fix it? I start a big work project this month and need a reliable laptop!

About a month ago, I changed out (okay, my cousin did) the factory HD for a 300 GB Seagate one that is slightly faster rpm, could that have caused the freezing?

    Thanks!!!!!

If you did a factory restore, you should already have PC Poctor on your machine. The new version is called Lenovo Toolbox. You might want to get than instead. Could run HD Tune to test the hard drive. Did you use the same disc to load office? I think the student version has the non-commercial thing in it.

    Thanks for the replies!

I ran PC Doctor 5 and the SMART Short Self Test (on the HD) failed!!!!!!!!!

The HD is new - purchased 6 months ago or so, and installed in Nov.

What do I do now? Thx!

The Office Pro Suite is a retail copy in plastic OEM box purchased personally by me at Costco. It was the same disk to install.

Hard disks can fail after 1 hour, 1 month, 6 months, 6 years...whenever.

We've had new drives go into RAID arrays from the same batch last wildly different times - they are complex mechanical parts that unfortunately fail on a fairly regular basis.

Backup any important data, get a new drive in there pronto and do a fresh install/restore.

    thanks for the advice!

I heard that I can take the HD out of a Western Digital Passport and put that into the Laptop, is that true? They are way cheaper than the one I bought.

I got a Seagate HD from newegg I think or someone like that, but it was a 6 months ago. i am definitely going to try to get my money back, it was like $200!!!! (300 gb)

    Thx!!!!!1

Most likely they'll exhange it for you. Seagate have five year warranties usually. As for the WD, it'll work if it has the same connector. The T60 uses SATA.
