Whenever I try to increase the sound level on a You Tube video playback , my T60 gives a loud "squeal" .

I presume this is due to some sort of sound "looping" back into the speaker .

Is there any way to resolve this.

I don't have a microphone plugged in when this happens so I presume its not a microphone problem .

doesn't it have a mic built in? I think it does. my x61 has a mic under my right arrow key. go mute the mic.

    Thanks for the reply.

Can you tell me how to mute the mic ? - I know how to mute the speakers with the little button on the top left of the keyboard but I can't see anything to mute the mic.

You can mute it via the sound options in your control panel.
