My T60 takes ages to load up and its completely a pain in the ass and I would like a remedy for it. Mainly its the CSS that takes forever to load up, I don't understand why =/ And are there any applications that the thinkpad runs that aren't necessary? I'm a college bound student that only likes the passphrase/fingerprint stuff mainly.

Well, there's a lot of stuff that Thinkpads have turned on by default. All the thinkvantage stuff, the virus scan, Google desktop, etc. Pretty much all that stuff that loads at boot is optional, you can remove them all from your startup.

Delete everything you don't need. Click Windows+r and type in msconfig. Go to start up and disable processes that you do not need. (Message center dadada) I would consult a more advanced user to do this (Unless you are already one ;)). Then Defrag your HDD. And if you want, a registry cleaner such as Registry Mechanic. It found 600+ faulty registry files. Wowwee!

PS - I urge you to delete Norton and everything else incorperated with Symantec (Symantec should have a total of three items in the Add and Remove section). It's bloatware and super slows your bootup. I'd go find NOD32 or Kaspersky. Those load up fast and barely use any resources.

Never opened it, no idea. Maybe tweak some settings in CSS to make it faster? Upgrade mem?

I'd go with Registry Mechanic. It not free but a little searching should be enough..... Anyway, anything with Norton is slow. But before you do any registry cleaning, do a backup just in case something goes wrong.

Typically this is how I maintain my startup - go through msconfig, click on the startup tab. Open a web browser. For each program name (left most column) search for it on the internet...it is typically easy to find by executable name what a program does. Uncheck the ones you don't want, then restart. If you wish to make this permanent, note the HKEY location beside each and that's where to find what to change to permanently affect your startup.

The only things I kept on my Thinkpad from the Thinkvantage utility set was the APC, AC/battery, Access, Hotkey/FN, and Client Security. I removed Symantec, DiskKeeper, Acrobat Reader preloader, and some other stuff. Aside from faster boots, I just get better system performance. Most people blame Symantec for that, but Diskkeeper is somewhat intrusive also.

I have Diskeeper, but it doesn't seem to slow my Thinkpad down. Maybe adjust some settings in Diskeeper?

I disabled Diskeeper because I got tired of the popups telling me that the hard drive needs defragmentation.

Does Diskeeper do anything different at all from the built-in XP defragmenter?

Nope. Windows's Defragmenter IS a lite version of Diskeeper! I found that out a year ago. Funny huh?

The Executive Pro version is much better than the basic Windows version as there is something called FragShield which increases the MFT to an appropriate size for speed, performance, and anti-framentation. Also there is something called I-FASST which need to be run cunjunction to a Primary or Secondary job. It moves tons of files to prevent fragmentation. Its about 50% better than the Lite version that Lenovo provides us and the Windows Version. Also Exec Pro does not give you a popoup all the time. It does nothing intrusive. All you need running is the DKservice.exe which only uses up ~8,000k of mem.

PS If that lite version has some or all of the features already list above, oh well. I never used the lite version. I uninstalled it right away.

I would uninstall all the anti virus software and replace it with NOD32. Disable automatic system backup and use IBM's backup software once in a while. Disable lenovo's message center.
