Just recently, when I put on my headphones, I noticed a constant background sound (like that of air blowing into the microphone), and when I type I hear the keys around my microphone being pressed. This is definitely not normal and it occurs all the time when the computer is on. I'm thinking that this has to do with some faulty software which is causing my speakers to playback whatever my mic is constantly picking up.
Also, when I run my mouse over any links a faint static sound can be heard over the constant air noise. I have tried turning off processes to fix the issue but it doesn't help.
Do any of you guys have suggestions as to how to fix this issue? Thanks in advance!

are you using windows XP? hit the mute button for the mic under the volume properties.
-
Ya, I am using XP. That mute button you speak of mutes my sound, not my mic.

If the "microphone" slide does not appear, then it is just disabled in the menu so click on Options-properties then find and enable it. -
have you tried updating your drivers -
And yes, I have updated all audio drivers.
Thanks for the help. -
Bump.
Any help appreciated... I know this is an old thread, but this is an on-going problem. -
windows XP?
right click on the speaker icon in the system tray.
click "open Volume Control"
go to "options" "properties"
select the "recording" bullet and make sure all choices are selected below.
when you click ok the volume sliders for the mic / line / stereo should show up. lower their volumes to 0. -
Thanks Sean, that helped. I had to lower the mic on the playback menu in order to switch it off, but it worked... Thanks again!

I have the same exact issue. I have tried disabling the microphone, the processes, you name it, ive tried it. I am desperate for a solution. Everytime I raise the volume level there is an ear piercing sound that comes out (I suspect this is due to the cloe proximity of the speaker to the microphone). I never recorded anything so I dont ever remember enabling the microphone in the first place! Please let me know what to do!! This computer is new and I cant believe this is happening so soon.

Stunner thank you for your answer! I realized it wasnt enough merely to disable the device, but you actually must lower the level of microphone volume all the way down.
Ahhh... FINALLY!!!
Anyone know if it is possible to switch from vista to XP for free?
