Yay just got my T60 this morning! :)

Everything is beautiful, display is great, viewing angles etc. Watched a movie.. looks as I expect.

If you close the laptop, there's some play on the right side.. normal? If you have a T60, does this occur on yours?

I think "some play" is about as descriptive as I can get :)

Otherwise it's a monster laptop. Not heavy, thin design.. and the hinges are so tight the bottom has to be held down to open it. Heh.

I guess my right side has a little "play" (it moves up and down a bit) when closed. I hadn't noticed until you mentioned it. Nothing that will bother me certainly.

my entire screen when closed (on both sides) plays a little bit.

are your lid lock thingies made out of plastic? I just got my t60, and i was surprised to find plastic hinges...they look kinda flimpsy as well

edit: the lock thingies feel flimpsy as well

The hinges look like metal to me.. they're pretty tight (need some effort to open the laptop.. which means it will be a while before it gets loose if ever).

Oh wow.. the latch is a very flimsy plastic. I'm shocked.. as heavy duty as the rest of the unit is... that's pretty sad.

If they make a better version of the latch i'd like to get that replaced before it snaps off..

Well, you guys answered several questions. I'd thought it was just my obsessive/compulsive attentiveness to detail that led me to nitpick once again. My new T60's lid does indeed have more play than you'd expect. The latch, I was amazed to see, seems plastic. And the battery latch is loose. That being said, I love working with the thing. I've wanted a Thinkpad for years, and figured that with the Lenovo takeover, this would be my last chance to get one. It's sad to see the dumbing down of a great brand. So the T60 may be a little dumber than, say, the T42, but it's not yet dumb-est.

can anyone speak/confirm that the t43 t42's latches are also plastic?

edit: yah, i'm keeping my t60 for sure as well. got it for just under a grand...sure beats those crap ass hp consumer line laptops that cost about the same

All the Thinkpads I've got (T30, T42 and T60) have plastic latches and there is some play in all of them when you close the lids. Other than the colours (green arrow in older thinkpads vs grey in new T60), I don't notice any difference in them. One latch on the T30 got bent before when I was in a hurry, but I easily straightened it out with my fingers and it's been good ever since.

So the related question is: what about that loose battery latch? Can I assume that this is a common problem?

hmm...my t60's battery latch seems fine. it doesn't move at all when you put it on the "LOCK" position...

the battery itself has a TINY amount of play when locked...not a bother though, way (and i mean WAY) less than the closed screen play.

edit: btw, ramian, thx for the confirmation on the latches
