    Hi Folks,

I was looking at configuring a T60 on Lenovo's website and some of the upgrades included:

    (a) An Extra 1 GB of RAM giving it a total of 2 GB RAM (Add $90)
    (b) 100 GB HD @ 7200 RPM (from the original HD which was 60 GB @ 5400 RPM)...(Add $90)

Basically I'm wondering if it's worth it for me to go ahead with such upgrades straight from the factory OR am I better off doing it by myself?

    Thanks...

P.S. I would consider myself an intermediate computer user with some experience when it comes to hardware (i.e. installation and removal, but that was ONLY on desktops.)

    Edit: Another quick question...

I have an install disc for Vista Ultimate (which I plan on putting to the new machine) and am wondering am I better off with the T60 coming with a default OS of Win XP or some flavor/version of Vista?

Do not buy the extra Ram for $90. There's a sweet deal for a Crucial 1 GB memory stick for $9.99 after rebate. Almost $8 for shipping though.

As for the hard drive, I recommend that you upgrade to the 7200rpm, the speed difference is quite significant.

As for the OS, order it with Vista Basic and save money, then install your Ultimate. I would personally go with XP since it runs so smoothly, especially after a clean install. If you decide to do an XP clean install, you should use my guide in my sig. ;)

For Vista clean installs, use stallen's: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=144783

i am a first-time thinkpad user and will tell you that upgrading the ram and hard drive on my t60 was a cakewalk. just as easy as on a desktop (maybe even easier when installing ram because there's no shoving wires to the side to try and reach the dimm slots!). The ram requires the removal of 4 screws from the bottom. the hard drive is 1 screw. you can do it.

Thanks for the help Arkit3kt and RoccoRob...

Judging from this it appears I should go with whichever OS is cheaper...in which case it's Win XP Home...OR Should I still stick with a little more pricey version of Vista?

Not to annoy the Windows fans, but how well does OSX86 run on the T60?...Are there tons of compatibility issues or not too many? Googling 'T60 osX86' yields forum posts (not necessarily from NBR) as of 2006...So I'm wondering if in newer versions of OSx86 more devices have been supported (ergo lack of complaints/issues?)

The HD you might want to get from Lenovo if you want the partitioned disk and all the Lenovo software which is pretty useful. But for the RAM go ahead and do it yourself, I consider myself to be about intermediate when it comes to computer knowledge, and I hadn't even installed or removed RAM before and was able to do it easily. I suggest going to the Lenovo site to view the memory installation and removal videos though, pretty straightforward and easy to understand.
