In my virtual box on my desktop machine, I can see a parameter under "System" that says VT-x/AMD-V and it says "Enabled." But on my T60, no such parameter appears. I've looked in the BIOS and I don't see any option to enable/disable VT-x (I remember that option being present on an X60 I had a while back).
The T5500 processor supports VT-x. So is this a limitation of the T60's chipset/BIOS? Is there no way to enable VT-x?

Nevermind. The T5500 doesn't support VT-x, according to Intel. I could have sworn the T5500 was what I had in my old X60, but I guess not.

So it looks like the T5600 supports VT-x and they're not too expensive on ebay. How difficult is it to swap out a processor in a T60?
Also, I'm seeing nothing in my T60 BIOS about VT-x. I'd be taking a risk that a setting would show up once I installed a VT-x capable processor. Can anyone with a VT-x enabled processor verify that there's a setting for VT-x in their T60 BIOS? Thanks. -
pretty easy, just remove the palmrest, keyboard, bezel around the keyboard and off goes the heatsink/fan assembly, then you can take off the CPU.
Lenovo Support & downloads - Hardware Maintenance Manual - ThinkPad T60/p (1951, 1952, 1953, 1954, 1955, 1956, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2613, 2623, 2637)
follow the hardware manual.
I got a T60 with T5600 and it has Virtualisation option in the BIOS menu, BIOS version 2.25. -

OK, thanks. I'm running the latest BIOS, so I guess I should be good to go if I get the processor.
On my desktop, my cpu usage is around 0-1% with my virtual machine running. But on my T60, my cpu is nearly 30%. So I'm guessing (hoping) a VT-x enabled cpu will bring that number down a good bit. -
don't know never use VMware...
