I just received my T60 Widescreen and I love the machine but am just a little disappointed in the noise of the fan. It seems to run at a medium level all the time even when doing nothing or just browsing the web. When the machine very first turns on it is silent but within a minute the fan is on and it doesn't stop. Is there any reason for this or a way I can control the fan speed? I tried using the thinkvantage setting to put the system on low power levels which shows that the fan noise should be reduced, but it doesn't seem to fix the noise of the fan. Are there any programs I could download to specifically control the fan speed or any other solutions that I don't know about?

    Hi,
Unfortunately I cannot remedy your problem but only give you a reference laptop - mine! :p

I have a T60 and occasionally the fan silently runs (slightly louder than my old T41 but thats understandable). After a few minutes then the fans seem to automatically go off.

I remember some threads about this... I'll post back hopefully with some answers!

Well thats fairly common- having the fan running most if not all of the time. One program you can try is called SpeedFan but it only works on certain notebooks.

Thanks for the link, could this program have bad side effects on the laptop though?

Not really, if you configure it and want to revert back, just uninstall it and delete it's settings.

Try thinkpads.com and download tp fan control.

That's the one you need to turn down fan speed.

One good 'feature' of thinpad is its loud fan.

I find that when the fan is running slower I get an annoying high pitch squeal coming from the vent. Anyone else notice this?
