    Hi, I recently bought a ThinkPad T60.

    T2500
    Ati x1300
    1 gig ram

The main problem with the computer is all the clutter-ware it comes with and all the the startup icons that eat up my cpu.

Accordingly, I ran msconfig and unchecked all of the startup tasks. After doing so, the computer ran great. My problem, however, is that the internet no longer worked.

I don't know why the internet wouldn't work without all of the thinkvantage software (specifically thinkvantage access connections as a guess), but for some reason it doesn't. When I plug my ethernet cable in, it shows connectivity, but cannot find the network address (or something like that).

My main goal is to have the least amount of startup items (zero is preferred) but also have a working connection. If anybody with familiar with IBM software and can help me out, it would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

Did you initially setup your network with the Think Vantage software? Try configuring it anew with the Windows tools. Or is the network hardware being disabled without the Lenovo network management software starting?

Are the network devices present in the device manager?

you might've unchecked something that needs to be started with windows. you just can't have 0 AFAIK. i wouldn't uncheck multiple items at the same time as you wouldn't know which one is causing the problem. try unchecking one at a time and boot into windows. if everything works fine, uncheck another, rinse and repeat.

There's a thread out from a few weeks ago talking about speeding up boot and general system responsiveness.

Rule of Thumb: Never disable something that you don't know what it is, even if it is a manufacturer add-on.

Go through your msconfig and search the internet for the program names and determine if that can be safely deactivated. My suggestion is to deactivate Norton and DiskKeeper Lite. Most of the other stuff is pretty lightweight, and doesn't have significant performance impact. I'd keep the security and access stuff enabled, especially if you are having issues connecting with it off. Also, if your function keys will stop working if you remove all the ThinkVantage services.

This computer is horribly slow with all of the thinkvantage stuff. Just watching the system tray on startup, I can tell that all of the extra stuff is what's slowing it down. Startup can take up to 3 minutes.

I don't really care about the function keys. The volume and brightness ones are the only ones I use, and they still work without the software (the green indicators just don't come up).

I want to get the most out of this cpu to compensate for my joke of a video card (I had no choice in what to buy, school discount.) I do expect to do some gaming on this thing, and games like css will run way better with the cpu not running so many things in the background.

I'll try unchecking things one by one and get back here after about 20 restarts :).

    Thanks for the help.

just to be certain, you do have the windows zero config started right? check it by going to start -> run -> services.msc -> and check for windows zero config(set it to automatically and start)
