I can't find a way to re-activate my touchpad after it was somehow deactivated and am now using the inbuilt mouse button and the two buttons just below the space bar - it's like going back to another century!
I'm running Windows XP, if anyone can help an old dinosaur like me I'd be most grateful.
I've tried to inbuilt windows helpto no avail - most frustrating

Are you sure the drivers are properly installed? Go to Lenovo's website and download it.

Do you still have the recovery partition, press the Thinkvantage button during the initial startup of the laptop. If the trackpoint and trackpad work in the Recovery console, then it is the software issue that you are having. If it doesn't then most likely it is a hardware issue.
