Whee Doh-geez, I got it! A maxed-out T60 with the *ultimate* screen :D Didn't think it was possible. A bit of phone calling got me to the 'right guy' at Lenovo who pulled it off. I even got the sale price!

--just curious: Lenovo says the T60 runs relatively cool. Anyone have experience to the contrary? What about using Arctic Silver?

oh joy, xmas in April!

I imagine the 15-inch T60 should be slightly cooler than its smaller brother. Also, the more powerful GPUs will contribute to heat. If you get a X1400/FireGL make sure PowerPlay is enabled and set to optimize battery life except when you are gaming. And of course, always set the CPU speed to be adaptive.

With these tweaks, the my T60 (C2D 2.0, X1400, 14.1-inch) is quite cool. However, the BIOS fan control is more aggressive than I like. With TPFanControl, I can sacrifice some cooling to achieve quietness.

It was my experience that my 15" T42 ran cooler than my 14" T41. I personally run in low power mode almost all the time. I almost never notice the difference. The screen is the biggest juice sucker on a notebook, not the CPU. With the Power Manager it's easy to flip between the options.

Thanx for the tips. There will be a lot of learning-as-I-go. And, no doubt there will be more questions. :)>)

Since I don't plan to tax the CPU (w/gaming) the fan shouldn't be a problem.

    btw...
For those interested (furrycute) my first attempt to get the Flexview was to call the main Lenovo sales number (866.968.4465) where I was told it was not available-- no way, Jose. Next, I called the Lenovo support number (800.426.7378) and was transferred to a salesperson who took my order. He said the Flexview was 'discontinued' but not 'unavailable'. Maybe I was lucky.

The sale price for the T60 WS that I'd spec'd out on Lenovo's website was just under $1700 before tax. Getting the Flexview screen added almost $300. There's also an $8 recycle fee, (but free shipping). I had to wait while the salesman got *permission* to give me the sale price.

    what i got: 2 GHz Core 2 Duo T7200 * 2GB PC2-5300 667MHZ 2DIMM * 160GB HDD 5400RPM * 15.0" SXGA+ * ATI Radeon X1300 NOWWAN 64M * DVD Rec 8X dual layer UB * XP Home * Lenovo Thinkplus 3-year Extended Service Agreement

Without going into all the details, the FlexView screens offer much better color consistency and wider viewing angles than other laptops screens. My T42 had it the FlexView. It is the best screen I have seen. Lenovo is about to get rid of them though you may be able to get a pre-configured one or as noted if you call in you might have a shot as well.
