    Hello Everyone,

I hope everyone is having a nice weekend. I am ready to make my move on a T60 but have been agonizing over two configurations.

The first is perfect for me but has the 64MB ATI x1300 and the second is overkill for my needs and $550 more, but has the 128MB ATI x1400 card. I will not be playing any games on the machine, with moderate photoshop, indesign, and illustrator multitasking being the most taxing things I will do on the system.

I have searched the forums and googled a lot before I posted and didn't find a definitive answer. In your opinion, will the x1300 be fine for Aero Glass in Vista? Some say yes, some say no. I've seen many articles on proposed requirements and suggestions, but I'm taking them with a grain of salt right now. IBM says I won't be able to upgrade the graphics myself if need-be at a later date so I have to think for the future now.

Help? Any opinions would be great!

Thanks in advance for the time.

    Andrei

Yes, x1300 will be fine for Aero Glass. It's more than enough for your requirements.

X1300 is really great for Vista, considering that it can run on an Intel GMA 950

    Thanks Faire and aer0sense!

That makes me feel a lot better and calms my fears from reading articles saying 128MB+ video was going to be suggested.

Time to order...have to be patient for 3-6 weeks now!

I'll post a detailed review of performance under vista beta 2 and linux with xgl support (gentoo & ubuntu) when it comes in.

    Cheers.

I'm waiting for my Inspiron 6400 arrives (hopefully this week), and I'll install XGL/Compiz on it as soon as possible. I hope x1300 works well with it.

    Andrei,
I have pretty much the same question you had a couple of months ago. At this point I'm trying to find out whether compiz/Xgl will run ok on a T60 with the X1300.
Did you end up getting the T60, and have you had time yet to test compiz/Xgl? (I'd be running ubuntu as well) If so, I'd much appreciate your impressions. Thanks!

I've seen xgl run on far older 3d accelerators than the X1x00 series, so my first thought is yes. However, the effects that you configure to run will ultimately be what really impacts system performance. Anecdotally, since the X1300 is ok for Aero, and the 3d effects are similar to xgl, then the x1300 should be ok. One note, xgl on ATI may be difficult to configure, read somewhere that the x1x00 closed source driver doesn't work with xgl yet, but that may be antiquated information, nVidia is always easier to deal with in Linux.

I agree with Noorm... order the 2623D6U now (before it's out of stock)... get it this week... and that sale price is this week only on in-stock ones only.

That price is close to the employee price. But employee priciing is final sale. Whereas you have 30 days to return it (even if used) if you dont like it... i would rather pay an extra $100 or so (public sale pricing) and get the right to return it.

i thought aero class requires 128 mb video memory thus makes x1300 uncapable of running it.
