Running Winxp (32bit) with 4gigs of ram.

When I i.e. start my backup application or run tortoise the performance drops radically.

I am using ACHI and got sort of the latest drivers. Any suggestion on what can be done to speed up things?

    Thanks,
    Erik

Have you checked CPU usage? My T61 has been behaving sluggish at the time, phantom CPU processes eat my CPU up to 40%-45%

Reinstall the software, run anti-spyware software such as Spybot S&D, SuperAntispyware, HijackThis, etc..

I would check for Viruses, Spyware, Adware, do a defrag, check for run away processes that are eating away CPU time and maybe look into upgrading to a nice 320GB or 500GB 7200rpm laptop drive.

Thanks for the feedback. Does anyone know where to find more info about "phantom CPU processes"? Never heard the phrase before but I assume it has something to do with processes which isn“t visible using win xp task manager?

I am not sure what "phantom CPU processes" means either. There is the concept of zombie processes in UNIX but I think this is different. I just look in my task manager and look at the applications and then the processes that are using the most RAM and CPU time. If you see something you don't recognize, look it up on google for a description before you "kill" it. If you know that a certain process shouldn't be running, "kill" it.
