My T60, which up until last month had been a model of consistency, was suddenly rendered incapable of performing simple operations that require more power then normal -- such as uploading files via FTP.

It is even incapable of sending e-mail messages that are above five lines in depth, and none which include the original message. In addition, it struggles to display sites such as ESPN.com, which has a large number of files and online processes going on all at once.

Posting messages to this board is also a problem, as it seems to get hung up in the operation, which is never completed.

The problem is baffling. I've had to use my little eee PC for many of the aforementioned functions, and it has no problem in doing so.

I've run a full diagnostic test from PC Doctor, and the T60 showed absolutely no problems in any area. It is almost never used on battery power, so the lack of power is baffling to me. Last week, I reformatted the hard drive, and restored it to the original state, which didn't help anything.

I'm really at a loss on this one, and if anyone has any suggestions at all, it would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

download tpfancontrol and see the temperature of your laptop.

I use the Mobile Meter temperature gauge, and nothing is wrong in that regard. The temp for the two processors generally stays in the 50 - 60 degree range, with the hard drive between 35 and 40 degrees.

did you ever dropped the laptop or had any liquid spill on the laptop?

    Try running Prime95

Everything you described is web based. Have you tried doing them with an ethernet cable plugged in (or on wifi if that's how you have been doing it)?

Nope, its never been dropped, or has liquid been spilled on the keyboard.

I'll try Prime95. Thanks for the suggestion.

Yes, all of the problems are Web-based. I access the 'net through a CAT5 cable, not through wifi.

Well then try it somewhere with wifi. I'm much more willing to suspect a bad ethernet card than some other problem with your laptop. Heck, I've dropped and spilled liquid on my T60 more than once and I don't have any problems with mine lol.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Its probably a bad ethernet card, which would certainly explain all of the connectivity issues.

    Thank you very much.

Thanks also to lead_org, but I don't think that the problem lies in the BIOS or OS. As already noted, its strictly an Internet problem, which would point directly at the ethernet card.

Just to follow up on the solution to this problem -- it was the fact that I hadn't updated to XP SP3 that was ultimately responsible. I downloaded the updates, and now my T60 is back to working like a champ.

So, if anyone else is experiencing difficulties that seem to be related to ‘net connectivity, such as the inability to view certain sites like ESPN.com or Yahoo.com, uploading posts to message boards, or successfully sending e-mails with lots of content, try downloading all of the latest MS updates and hopefully your issues will be resolved.
