    Hi all,

On July 4 I turned on my T60P Widescreen (8744J2U) laptop after it had been hibernating for several days only to find that the DVD/CDROM drive does not work anymore. Under Device Manager this is the device status: This device cannot start. (Code 10). I tried uninstalling but this did not work. I tried system restore to a couple weeks ago and this also did not work. I called tech support and they sent me a new drive, got it today, and same problem. So apparently it's not the DVD/CDROM drive. I called tech support again and they said it was probably the OS and that I should reformat. I just recently bought this laptop so I am very upset. I guess I was stupid to think that since this is a thinkpad that I didn't need to backup all my files to discs right away.

So my question is: Has anyone had a similar problem? If so, did you have a successful solution? Does anyone have any other ideas for me to try before I reformat?

Thank you all for your time! Any help is appreciated.

I haven't had any problems with my CD/DVD drive, but try updating all drivers and software and then see if the problem persists, if so, then go through with the reformat.

As for the reformat, I recommend saving all your personal files to an external hard drive before reformatting. Namely the ones under the "My Documents" folder. I have reformatted 3x with my computer (in under 1 yr) and all I really needed was the files in that folder.

Also, keep in mind the sooner you reformat the better because the longer you use your comp the more you will change settings and files and the more troublesome the reformat deal will be. Hope this helps, good luck!

UPDATE: I reformatted about a week ago and everything seemed to be fine. However, today I noticed the same problem. After calling Lenovo to arrange a pick up for my laptop, I decided I would try one last time doing extensive researching on what the problem could be. I found that someone had mentioned on another forum that ITunes can cause this problem. I uninstalled ITunes, restarted my computer, and VOILA! It's working again. Just wanted to let everyone know just in case anyone has the same problem they can try that. If for some reason later on the drive stops working again, I'll post an update (meaning ITunes wasn't the problem). But so far so good! Thanks guys! :)
