    Hello,

I know I have gone thru this before, bare with me this is a first. I am going to attempt installing Intel T7600 CPU, Kingston 3GB RAM, Kingston SSD 128 GB, & XP Pro SP3 2002. I have also purchased the recovery discs for this model & XP SP3 OEM, I was going to have an IT Tech do this work but being FLAKY kind of worries me with this operation. I have been told to purchase Arctic 5 jelly, do they sell this @ FRYS? OK, I have looked on the LENOVO site & need some help on finding installation example videos & literature for all these installations I need, please help in this matter. I believe I can pull this off with a some proffesional advise, I am eager to learn. I want to thank everybody for all the great support I have recieved here!

    Sincerely

    BT60

I'm not a professional, but I'd be happy to help. You need to remove the palm rest, keyboard and keyboard bezel. Then you need to remove the heatsink/fan, which will give you access to the CPU. Just watch the videos for removing those parts and you should be fine. There's a link to the support and training site in the sticky, which contains the videos you need.

we can spoon feed you only so much.   first, do yourself the favor of reading and learning so you have a better understanding of what you don't know so you can ask specific questions.

    good luck. ;)

    Hello,
    here we go....
I have replaced the processor, does the thermal grease apply to the fan assembly?

    Thanks,

you apply the thermal paste to the top of the cpu, only a tiny drop is needed, make sure you spread it as thin as possible.

In the optional DIMM slot on the bottom, do install the 2GB Memory or the 1GB memory in this slot?

You need to apply the thermal compound on the CPU's surface,

YouTube - How to Apply Thermal Compound to a CPU

this is a desktop CPU, but you can do the same with your laptop

    Hello,

I think the thermal paste I have is contaminated, who carries this paste (Radio Shack, Fry's, etc...)

    Thanks,

Radio Shack carries artic silver 5. Use a credit card to scrape it down to a thin even layer. I like to do both the heat sink side and the cpu side really thin.

90%+ isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol with paper towel.

BTW, using SSD with an OS that does not support TRIM will lead to long term performance degradation. Ditch that XP and go Windows 7!

If you have a hard time finding hte 90+% isopropyl alcohol at the drug store, you can always try the hardware store for denatured alcohol.

Is it blank, or is there just no backlight? I know on my T60 the cable to the inverter could go on either way, but only one way would light up the screen.

It is blank, power is on, the only green indicators on are the charge plug light, the power + & circle w/ the z inside of it.

It would be very difficult to tell that the screen is on at all if the backlight is out. Try holding it at odd angles in a room with low glare. The only other thing I can think of would be a bad ribbon cable.

Well, work backwards. Also, just for fun, try reversing the connector to the inverter if like on the T60 it can go on both ways.

It's not your CPU or the SSD, you know that much.

    Hello,

I took it apart twice, no luck. I checked everything with the videos assembly & disassembly twice, still same results. I thought it might be the SDD card, I installed the old card , same result. I tried all obvious things in reverse, no Bueno! Anybody work on T60P's on this Forum?

    Thanks for all your help,

    It's not that different from a T60, and I've got a T60p mobo in my T60 anyways.

Are you positive the mobo was good to begin with?

Did you try just doing the little 2 prong connection between the inverter and the LCD the reverse of how you have it?

    Yes,

My T60P was working very well before this installation. I took out the (Fan, Bezel, Keyboard, Hard Drive,CPU), I disconnected & reconnected according to videos. As far as the 2 prong connection between the inverter and the LCD the reverse of how you have it, I am not sure exactly what you are talking about.

    Thanks,

You know that two prong connector that goes from the inverter to the LCD? the little at the base of the screen frame? Just turn it over, so it is rotated 180 degrees (i.e. so different pins are touching each other).

WAIT - you took out just the things you listed, or the things you listed and the screen too?

I did not remove the screen or any connections for the screen
Once again 3 times, I took it apart thinking I overlooked something again, I checked all connections beyond what I did. I am at a stand still here.

    Thanks,

Oh...hmmm...then I got nothing. I'd double check that the ram is properly seated. Try one stick at a time if you have more than one in there, could be one of them is bad.

And you checked that you screwed in the screw that seats the CPU? The battery was out during all this, right?

    Hello,

I triple checked the RAM, one stick @ a time, Brand new. CPU Triple checked screw, reinstalled, Battery was completely out of T60P. I think this will require someone with test equipment, do you work on these T60Ps?

    Thanks,

Not for a living I don't. I know someone who does, he's in NY though.

There's no way you could have shorted something with the battery out.

The only thing I can think of really is a dead CPU. Try swapping the old one back in. If it's just for a minute, the thermal paste doesn't hav to be perfect (but just for a minute...and there has to be SOME thermal paste on there), so just slap the old one in and see what happens.

I know it doesn't help because you apparently have tried both sticks one at a time, but ram being new doesn't mean anything. I have gotten as much new ram that is faulty as I have new ram that isn't faulty.

Wow, so not working even on the old parts. That pretty much only leaves a dead board, but I have no idea how you'd kill a board unless you were vigorously rubbing your socks on shag carpeting before touching it.

    Hello,

It looks like I have to leave the unit charging for a while before I turn it on from a completely dead battery, I originally turned it on & nothing, now after a few minutes I tried it again & it is working, I bet if I did the same thing with the upgrades it will work. I did not no that it had to charge for a while, what do you think?

Never experienced that before. I've had my battery go down to 1% and then hibernate and it's ready to go as soon as I plug it in.

This could just be something was buggered (that's a technical term...) and just needed wait for for the capacitators to drain, though I'd have thought they'd have done that while you were at dinner. If I were you, I'd do your upgrades one at a time starting from the back (i.e. cpu, try it, then ram, try it, then hard drive, try it, because in this order it limits the amount of work you have to do).

Is this on the old hard drive? I've never had to wait much. If the time is any different, it hasn't been by enough to notice. I think I officially have no idea what is going on.

It doesn't beep at you, does it?

This is the 90w power supply, right?

Yeah, just follow the prompts on that...but those beeps mean things, so keep track of them (long or short, how many, in what order). It has been a long day for me, so I'm going to bed now. I'll check back in in the morning.
