T60p Windows Vista Installation / Recovery

I have a T60p laptop with Windows XP. I am able to purchase Thinkpad Windows Vista recovery DVD's that will work on my system. Will I need a product key when I recover. Since the vista recovery DVD's and manuals don't come with it.

I believe you will need a product key code since you did not order your T60P preordered with Vista. You'll probably have to activate Vista after installing it on your system. Look for your product key on the DVD restore set.

Typically if you buy a lappy from any mfg the preloaded OS doesn't require activation. Some provide a product key like Dell (i've read this might be changing) and others don't like my recent HP purchase that came with Vista Premium.

p.s. If Levono can send out a preconfigured restore disk with your configuration that doesn't require activation then that's very cool.

the T60/p has an XP Pro key on the bottom. my old T42 never asked me for the key when I installed XP Pro from restore CDs. Don't want to try this if it means that XP Pro code on the T60 is converted to a Vista key...

anyone ever tried vista restore disks on a T60/p? Does it ask for key/activation? Does it pull the key from the hardware somehow?

The guy selling me the Thinkpad Vista Business 32bit Recovery DVD's said it pulls the KEY from the hardware config but I want to verify this before spending a few hundred dollars?

Do you care about being able to return to XP? If I did something like this, I would get a second hard drive and keep one with XP and one with Vista, allowing me to swap back if I *really* needed XP to run some program.

So, it's critical that installing vista does not wipe out the XP product key...

    Anyone?

I'm currently waiting for my t60p to try it the other way (putting XP on a machine that came with vista). I Already have the second hard drive and restore cds, just waiting on my computer to see if it works. I will see if it duplicates the number for both.

I just read the thread started by Wh1t3w0lf about Vista install. Looks like I'll need to get a copy of XP to install since the restore cds retrieve info from BIOS. looks like if you use recovery cds with an operating system other than the one that came originally with the laptop, it would have the same licensing info for both. I need mine to be legal so I can get updates, I spend a lot of time online.

What I am going to do is mount my laptop hard drive, I have an adapter to my desktop, and I will do a drive copy. Then I will format my laptop hard drive and then go a head with the Vista recovery. All this if it doesn't ask for a vista key once I can verify this I'll buy the Vista recovery set and do this.
