I currently can not get any sound out of my laptop while running ubuntu. I have all the mp3 codecs installed and the song will pay on the screen. Any ideas? I saw something about it on thinkwiki but it was far too confusing for me

According to this it doesn't look like the sound card is supported fully in ALSA just yet...but looks like work is well underway. Looks like this link might provide the workaround as well. Check it out.
Hope this helps. -
I'd wait until October for Gutsy. Right now the kernel doesn't support some stuff in Santa Rosa. 3D desktop doesn't work for X3100 unless you install Gutsy drivers (a real pain) and the Intel 4965AGN also needs Gutsy drivers.
I'm not sure if the sound is tied into the kernel issue but it could be. If you have an Nvidia card and a non Intel wifi card consider yourself lucky. -
Give DesktopBSD or PC-BSD a try, the support is so great for the sound cards.

I haven't gotten sound working on my T61 but I have got the X3100 with Beryl working, except videos don't play while using compiz/beryl.
FPR works fine, though I want to customize it.
I'm also waiting for Gutsy before I spend a lot of time configuring and customizing my T61 for Linux. -
Try updating your sound card drivers. -
+1 for the waiting list for Gutsy or whatever version Lenovo is supporting. I want to know I can get everything to work before I make the jump on this laptop.
T61 + Ubuntu and no sound
