Anybody tried any of following combination in T61?

    (1) 2GB + 1GB

    (2) Different brands of each module - for ex. PNY and MICRON

    (3) 2GB + default inbuilt 512 MB

Since the memory prices are going back up - this will help.

The T61 can support up to 4GB. Your configurations will work. The brand doesn't really matter as long as they're the same clock speed.

mixxing up brands will not make a difference. i would place the larger module in the first dimm slot(the one closer to the mother board)

Is there a reason for that?

It increases your access speed assuming the steppings are the same for both sticks. The increase is probably negligible, but you might as well if the lid's open.

I went with 2 X 2GB for the sake of dual channel and even though i have XP, I will eventually give in to vista...(maybe after SP2)

My notebook has option #3 right now, but i have another 2gb stick on the way [2gb density stick prices seem to be on the way up].

All of the above options will work as long as your bios recognizes the memory.

Did it work? :) If yes I can save money by buying one 2GB and one 1GB. :)

Just to let you know, DDR2 prices are pretty much at rock bottom right now because the market got flooded with chips, so manufacturers are still trying to clear out their warehouses. If you see a good deal on 2gb sticks, you're better off buying two now rather than waiting.

That said, 4gb of ram is a pain. I'm forcing myself to go 64bit so that extra gig doesn't go to waste, which is resulting in all sorts of strange and interesting problems with driver support.

Lenovo itself doesn't actually have XP 64bit drivers for the T61, and the Intel graphics drivers I've tried have failed miserably. Without drivers, XP doesn't want to go above 640x480.

Ubuntu and linux in general has it's own set of driver problems, between Intel being months behind on their graphics and wifi drivers, and Lenovo ignoring the existance of Linux entirely.

So, unless you're going with 64bit Vista, you're in for a fun time.
