I have a T61 (T7300 2.0Ghz, 4GB RAM) and am looking to put a fresh install of either XP or Win 7 on it. Would a system configured this way be better off with XP or Win 7? I run standard Office apps, browsers, Acrobat Pro, etc. thanks

if you have a dedicated graphics card as well, it's definitely good enough to run win7

Perfectly acceptable, I plan on upgrading to Windows 7 later this year and I got also integrated, I ran the RC and it ran fine. I think you will love Windows 7.

I just installed win7 on my R61 with the integrated x3100 graphics card, 2MB RAM and a 2.1GHz T8100, which is pretty close to your T61. Win7 works fine, and the x3100 runs the Aero interface without problems or lag. I upgraded from XP (a clean install, actually) and I'd say that win7 is just as snappy as XP was... and that's with the newer eye candy turned on.

I just decided that it was time to move on from XP. Give win7 a try... you can always go back to XP if you don't like it.

I have a t61p and I'll be honest, so far, you are NEVER better off using XP than a later OS.

I agree 100%. You should be fine, and worst case turn aero off.

Windows 7 is definitely worth it in your case. The integrated graphics should be no problem for the Aero functions.

I'm a big fan of Windows XP but I really think Windows 7 is the successor to it.

Plus if you get Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate, you can download Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode.

i use the win 7 on a T60 with the intel integrated gpu, and it still runs relatively smoothly. Microsoft have combined the stability/low hardware resources requirement with that of vista eyecandies.

If you're purely interested in performance, XP is the real deal. There are some areas where XP has a leg up like networking. I run Vista mainly because I like the slicker interface, but I don't see it, nor W7 for that matter, offering me anything that XP does not, other than the interface of course.

Aero ran fine in Vista on my R60, which likewise, had the Intel 950 card. I would expect the same of W7, but don't have any personal knowledge.

I have similar specs to your T61, but with the Intel graphics card. Win 7 is great. I liked Vista as well, but Win 7 seems to run flawlessly and smooth on my machine.
