    Hi guys,

My T61 seems to hibernate at pretty random times. It's set to hibernate after 5 hours on battery (and standby after 20 mins on battery). Once the laptop goes into standby, will it eventually go into hibernation? That never seems to happen for me (and yes, hibernation is enabled and set to 5 hours in the ThinkPad power management tools).

Another weird thing - sometimes it hibernates just a few minutes into standby while on AC power - which I set to "never."

Is there somewhere else I should be looking for hibernation settings?

    Thanks!

I've had the same issue. I'd rather my laptop go to hibernation after a while on battery (usually means I've forgotten about it), since the sleep mode does drain power (albeit slowly). But no luck. Never hibernates. (Whereas when plugged in, it'll hibernate 'on time', according to how I've setup power management). I'd be interested to hear if anyone figures this one out.

I've recently had the screen brightness lowered automatically after only 1 idle minute, this happens only on battery. Still trying to pinpoint the problem.

Yeah, I have a T60 and this hibernation thing happens when I restart the computer and dont log in for sometime, it goes into hibernation. I disabled hibernation from the power management options and it doesn't occur anymore.

Another thing about hibernation, I recommend you DO NOT use it because I have had this computer for about 10 months and instead of shutting down I would hibernate it every time. Now I have a big freezing issue and my HD may be corrupt. I have heard that hibernation is bad for your computer from several friends (who are very computer savvy) and a Dell support specialist. So, if anything just shut down or standby. You can see more of my issue in my forum:

Thanks, guys. I guess I'll do some research and then probably turn hibernation off. My machine refused to get out of hibernation today (kept trying and then rebooting), which thoroughly pissed me off.

    Btw, I am on XP.

ive started to use Sleep more often (near istant awakening). If the comp needs to be off for more than a day, just shut down. but if im going to use it again within hours or even the next day...im doing sleep. I havet noticed a drop in bat life.

When you say "sleep", do you really mean "standby"? I thought "sleep" was the same as "hibernation". Standby definitely uses some battery power - not nearly as much as when it's on, of course... but some.

Standby on XP and Sleep on Vista are nigh on the same thing (it's technically known as suspend-to-RAM). The only difference most people might notice is Vista can do what's called "hybrid sleep" which is essentially the same thing as the sleep mode that OS X uses (Apple calls their implementation "SafeSleep"). What it does is instead of simply suspending to RAM, it also writes the contents of RAM to the HDD as well (what hibernation does) and then goes to RAM suspend. What this accomplishes is it pretty much insures that regardless if your laptop (or desktop) loses power completely it will still resume from where you left it as it will fall back to the hibernation cache if the RAM loses power. It pretty much makes your machine "power safe" when in sleep mode.

On the original thread topic, my first guess would be that the TP Power Manager may be conflicting with Window's own settings. Then again, XP can be a bit finicky with standby and hibernation on it's own, so... *shrug*
