I have T61 14inch widescreen with T7500 and Nvidia Discrere Graphics card, 2gm ram, 100gb 7200rpm hard drive. This computer seems really good at heat mangement as the touchpad never get really hot compared to my hp. Does that mean I can leave it on like a deskptop? I also heard thinkpads are like tanks of computers. So leave it on like desktop?

Also what does stop hard drive mean? does it prevent wear, but will the computer turn off when that happens? Pro and cons?

    Thanks

A spinning hard drive sucks battery, so when running on batteries you can tell it to turn of the HD at a given time increment just like the LCD in order to cut down on battery drain.
I guess in the end it will save a couple hours of HD life if you plan on keeping it for 10-15 years, but I dont think it will have a huge impact on life, considering we still have a laptop that is like 8 years old and was quite abused back in its prime and the HD is perfectly fine. Moral of the story, use your HD as much as you want while plugged in, you wont be using this laptop long enough to see its demise.

And yes, you can leave that puppy on as long as you want, I do it all the time, just set the screen to turn off after like 15-20 minutes, as the light behind the screen does tend to dim over the years.

From an entirely different point of view I would recommend you to make it go to standby after 10-20 mins bcoz of the energy u will save.........not that it will save u big bucks but its good for environment........if u care.

Ahhhhh, turning off the laptop will save like a wheelbarrow full of coal for an entire year.

Turning off your laptop when you dont use.
For your laptop health even though Thinkpad is strong.
    Anyhow it's also worn.

I use my T61 as a desktop replacement. If I walk away for more than 30 minutes I usually put it into sleep mode. Waking up only takes a few seconds, and it saves the wear and tear the laptop would otherwise endure.

so the main consequence of leaving it on is simply that it is bad for the environment.

Keeping it always on will also slightly increase the rate of aging on your laptop, especially your LCD life (gets progressively dimmer).

In low power mode (LCD off or dimmed, HD spun down, C2D CPU throttling enabled) these new laptops will consume less energy than your typical 60 watt light bulb.
Yes, I guess you will save enough energy in a year to heat up a few microwave dinners by putting it into standby.

It's not that the energy saved by one person is especially significant, however, multiplied by hundreds of thousands of people adopting environmentally beneficial practices, it could be significant.
