I just completed the clean install guide for my just bought T61 14,1 inch. Except for some imperfections regarding the fit and finish of the thinkpad I'm quite happy with it.

Just now however when I disengaged the power adapter (so only on accu) I notice an anoying peeping noise which is clearly hearable when there is little surrounding noise.

It's like a morse code but I do not know where it corresponds with: cpu, hard disk activity, ... I just don't know.

What is this peep, where does it come from? How do I remove it?

So you are just on battery power? Their should be one beep when you either plug in the AC adapter or remove it. Maybe your battery isn't seated properly? Check to see your battery is pushed in all the way and the switch on the bottom is in the locked position.

Although there is a battery wiggle problem with the thinkpad series, the battery is seated perfectly (so: as good as it can be).

    Edit:
Just checked it again: turned back on the power adapter: peeps are gone. So it's only there when the laptop is on battery.

    Edit 2:
When i switch from high performance mode to balance mode, the high peeps disappear although a very soft sound which is similar to something like an electric current can be heard more profound. In high perfomance mode the peep comes back and also this sound of an electical current is still noticeable in between. That is also gone when I switch to the power adapter.
These imperfections always happen to me. I am very sensitive for that kind of things, that must be the reason I attract it...

Does it sound more like a whine? This is a well known problem with all Core 2 Duo's, and there are a ton of threads on this issue.

Hm. Hard to say. If it is a core 2 duo problem, than why should it only occur when I'm not connected to the external power adapter? Then, there is only the fan that I can hear.

I believe the CPU whine only happens on battery power.

If you want to fix it, I think currently the only known method is using RMclock to prevent the laptop from down-stepping the CPU speed. Might cause a decrease in battery life.

Is your battery in good shape? Can you tell how many cycles it has gone through? Does it charge properly? Just some thoughts that I had....

Well it must be that CPU whine, I've read myself into it and the symptoms are very alike.

So that must be it. Glad to know where it comes from. Thanks for this info.

The battery is new :). It has had two cycles and it seems it charges properly.

    I have solved the problem!

I contacted Lenovo support and they advised me to do the following:

Go to the BIOS (F1 with start up)
    Go to Config
    Go to Power
    Locate the Intel Speedstep
    Disable the speedstep technology.

The whine is gone. Battery live will be about 15 minutes less. It's good for now. I will contact Intel later. Lenovo didn't see it as an defect because it happens on a regular bases. I however do see it as a defect.

Move your cell phone away from the computer.

You have a GSM phone and your ThinkPad is picking up interference from it.
