Well one week back i got my new t61 14.1 " widescreen with camera from lenovo with windows vista pre installed on it.

To be frank it was far below than my expectation!! I would like to ask following Q!!

    1) How to reinstall OS if it crashes as they have not privided any cd to reinstall it?
    2) my hard disk is making noice when ever OS tries to access it? is it normal?
    3) Why Thinkvintage system update is not working on windows vista?
    4) Is there any way to downgrade my vista to xp with out paying any extra money?
    5) Why my system is showing only 86 GB on a 7200 rppm 100 gb drive. how much space does vista want?

I would first suggest you calm down there are perfectly decent answers to all your questions.

    1. You can create your own rescue media (1 cd, 2 dvd's needed) from within vista. Just search on recovery media.

    2. Some noise is normal

    3. No idea you need to be more specific about what the issue is here

    4. No -- they'll charge you

    5. Os takes a bit of room, but more than likely it is the system restore feature in Visa that lets you rollback to a point in time prior to when an error may have occured. It fluctuates in its usage of hard drive space. Plus the recovery partition takes up space.

You got a great machine just takes some getting used to.

We're here if you need help,

    Phil

If you have either Vista Business or Ultimate, you're officially allowed to downgrade to Windows XP Professional. To warn you beforehand, the process is rather tortuous, though. I haven't done it myself, so I can't help with the details. You may want (and need) to contact directly Microsoft, if you considered the downgrade seriously. This might contain some useful information to begin with:

Thanks for your reply !! Well I dont have a DVD writer with me .. Can you tell how much space it is going to suck up so that i can burn that stuff on Cd's.

Secondlly about think vintage problem, What is happening i am using the thingvintage password manager, so now when i enter into a website which I have already saved into passwword manager, it asked for security password. After giving the password also, it simply stays there.. showing me the cliecnt security window pop up running until i manually kill tht. It is happening everytime can u tell me how to reset it?

    1) have you tried doing a clean install? Search Stallen's guide. it also tells how you to create your own recovery disc

    2) i've always thought all HD makes noises when the OS is accessing it

    3) uninstall and reinstall thinkvantage update manager, should resolve your issues

4)downgrading to XP through lenovo will cost some money..your best bet is to pull out an old XP cd and just install it on your machine and use an old license from a previous computer

    5) you never get the full amount of ure HD..for example..i have a 160gb..however, it only shows 149gb...that has something to do with the bit counting rate...on top of that, you probably have a hidden lenovo partition for the backups..so that is taking up 4-5gb...stallens guide also shows you how to delete it

most of the problems you listed are all normal. It normal for a hard drive to make noise unless you got a SSD.

If you want to create Revcory Media go to Sreach and type Recovery Media and it should pop up. IT TAKES 9 CDS or 1 CD 1DVD

Also i would recommend a clean install as most of the software from thinkpad the computer already has
